Atalanta vs Marseille tips and predictions: Hosts to make history in Bergamo

The second leg of the Europa League semi-final between Atalanta and Marseille will take place at Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo on Thursday (2000 BST).

The first-ever meeting between Atalanta and Marseille resulted in a 1-1 draw at Stade Velodrome, so the Italians have given themselves a great chance of progression.

The hosts are a week away from facing Juventus in the Coppa Italia final so victory here could set them up for the most successful season in the club's history.

The club have been relegated nine times, including three this century since last lifting the Coppa Italia in 1963, but they’ve yet to triumph in Europe.

They currently sit fifth in Serie A after beating Salernitana 2-1 on Monday, and are still on the hunt for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Marseille didn’t have a Ligue 1 fixture at the weekend so Jean-Louis Gasset has been able to let players recover and focus exclusively on the trip to Bergamo.

A dicey run of form saw the French side lose five games on the spin before stopping the rot to turn their quarter-final tie with Benfica around, winning 1-0 on the night and 4-2 on penalties.

Les Phoceens are unbeaten in four matches since, yet they’ve rode their luck, surviving 45 minutes with 10 men and scoring a 96th-minute equaliser.

PSG remain the only team to have beaten Marseille on their patch this season so the fact that Atalanta escaped with a draw bodes well for Gian Piero Gasperini’s men.
