Xabi Alonso praises Bayer Leverkusen's super subs for victory over West Ham

Standout performances from substitute players Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella earned praise from coach Xabi Alonso.

The turning point came with strategic substitutions, as Tella and Boniface entered the fray in the 67th and 76th minutes, injecting fresh energy into Leverkusen's attack.

Jonas Hofmann, introduced with just 13 minutes remaining, broke the deadlock on the 83rd minute, before Boniface sealed the victory with a decisive goal in the 91st minute, marking his triumphant return from a three-month injury hiatus.

Reflecting on the hard-fought win, Alonso commended the impact of his substitutes, emphasizing their pivotal roles in securing the result. "We are pleased with both the outcome and the team's performance," Alonso remarked post-match. 

"Despite the challenges of breaking down their deep defense, our bench players made significant contributions when it mattered most."

Looking ahead to the return leg on 18 April at London Stadium, Alonso anticipates a different approach from West Ham on their home turf. 

"We expect a shift in strategy from West Ham in the upcoming match," Alonso noted. "With nothing to lose, they will likely adopt a more aggressive stance. Nevertheless, we will be prepared to compete and secure our place in the semi-finals."

Leverkusen's impressive unbeaten streak of 42 games across all competitions underscores their formidable presence this season.

With a Bundesliga title within reach, Leverkusen remain focused on their upcoming domestic clash against Werder Bremen, poised to clinch the coveted German league title for the first time in the club's history.

Furthermore, Leverkusen's pursuit of glory extends beyond the Bundesliga, with aspirations for a treble in sight. 

Alongside their Europa League campaign, Leverkusen eye the German Cup, with a showdown against Kaiserslautern scheduled for May 5, 2024, at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, offering an opportunity to etch their name in football history.
