Nathan Aspinall celebrating
Premier League darts rolls into Sheffield for the final night before the play-off finals. Can we find you some winning tips for Night 16 on Thursday, May 22?
Sixteen weeks of top flight (pardon the pun) darting action is nearly in the bag and it all boils down to the battle for the final play-off place between Nathan Aspinall and Michael van Gerwen.
All the momentum is behind the Asp. He beat MvG in the quarter-final last week in Aberdeen and went on to win the night sweeping Chris Dobey aside 6-1 in the final.
The win propelled the Stockport man four points above his Dutch rival in the table, and because the way the draw is made for the final round 4th and 5th play each other in the quarter final again. So it's win at all costs for MvG or he is toast.
Aspinall has suffered the heartache of two fifth placed finishes in 2023 and 2024, so will be desperate to ensure he doesn't miss out again at the final hurdle.
It's already an uphill battle for the inconsistent van Gerwen. The seven-time champion has yet to win a night all season, which would have been a crazy prediction at the start of the tournament. He now needs the full five points to qualify for the play-offs at the 02 next Thursday evening.
Van Gerwen will be struggling with the weight of a golden duck on his back, and he has only reached two Premier League Night finals - losing to Luke Littler in both.
If van Gerwen can get the better of Aspinall, which won't be easy, then Littler will be waiting for him in the semis - if the World Champ has dispatched Stephen Bunting.
With several mountains to climb in Sheffield, van Gerwen will certainly deserve his place in the play-off finals if makes it all the way in Sheffield, but it's not something we are going to back.
Aspinall has beaten MvG in four of their five matches in the Premier League this campaign, and we think he can make it five. Although it will be a fight, a 6-4 scoreline is winking at us; it's a score which has landed in four of the last eight clashes between the two.
Sadly with Luke Littler, Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price already booked in the play-offs there's not a great deal going on in the other matches.

However, one subplot is Iceman, who needs to nail down third to avoid playing Littler in the play-off semis. Not that he'd be too worried given his record against the World Champ.
If Aspinall goes all the way in Sheffield and collects the full five, he will finish third and Price will finish in fourth. So Price will keen to stay in this fight as long as possible, and backing him to beat Chris Dobey in the quarter-final is the way to go.
For the winner of the night, I'm leaning towards another Humphries win. He lost a cracking match with Littler in Aberdeen last Thursday.
Humphries hit nine maximums but was still beaten 6-3 in the quarter-final by Littler, and he'll be smarting from that.
If the wind is right Humphries will play Littler in the final in Sheffield, and that would be a hell of a warm-up for what many expect to be the play-off final at the O2.
