French Open 2024 winner Carlos Alcaraz with the trophy at Roland Garros

It’s that time of the year when we find out who is the best at hitting fluffy yellow balls on a sticky orange surface in Paris – yes, it’s the French Open!

Following Rafael Nadal’s retirement, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Spain’s domination over the event was over. Well, last year proved otherwise.

Carlos Alcaraz powered to victory at last year’s Roland Garros, beating a determined Alexander Zverev over five sets.

The world’s best players return to Paris for the 2025 edition of the French Open and surprise, surprise, Alcaraz is the leading favourite.

The likes of Zverev, Jannik Sinner and Casper Ruud will be doing all they can to knock the Spaniard off his perch, and they’re not the only ones.

The last remnant of the old generation – yes, we’re talking about Novak Djokovic – will be looking to upset the apple cart as the Serb targets a record-extending 25th major singles title.

If that wasn’t enough, winning the French Open would secure a mind-blowing quadruple career Grand Slam. If you’ve never heard of that before, that’s when a player wins each major title four times.

French Open men’s outright odds (top six)

Carlos Alcaraz – 11/8

Jannik Sinner – 7/4

Alexander Zverev – 15/2

Alcaraz in red hot form

Defending champ Alcaraz is favourite for a good reason – the man is absolutely flying.

Alcaraz heads to Paris on the back of his win at the Italian Open, where he beat Italy’s Jannik Sinner over two sets in the final. Not only that, the Spaniard absolutely hammed Sinner in the second set, winning 6-1.

A couple of weeks earlier, Alcaraz reached the Barcelona Open final and won the Monte-Carlo Masters. In short words, the man is playing well on clay.

As things stand, the 22-year-old is available at 11/8 in the outright market. Those short odds underline just how strongly the bookmakers feel about the defending champion.

Zverev set for latest heartbreak?

It feels like Alexander Zverev has been in the game for years, though it still baffles that the German superstar is yet to win a Grand Slam title.

The 28-year-old boasts two Tour Finals victories and has even tasted Olympic gold. Yet when it comes to the four majors, the German has three agonising finals on his record.

The build-up to this year’s event hasn’t been great. Zverev recently suffered a second-round defeat in Hamburg, reportedly vomiting 37 times before the match.

On a brighter note, he has won the Bavarian International Tennis Championships last month and enjoyed a quarter-final run at the Italian Open.

While he remains a contender, the 15/2 price does seem somewhat generous.

Sinner to bounce back in style?

The 2025 French Open will mark the first major since Jannik Sinner’s return from his three-month suspension.

The Italian returned a positive test for Clostebol in 2024 but avoided a hefty punishment - much to the disgruntlement of some in the tennis world.

Nevertheless, Sinner marked his return to action with a run to the final at the Italian Open. Not only did the 23-year-old become the first Italian to reach the final of the competition since Adriano Panatta in 1978, but he also proved he is match fit and ready to rumble in spite of his time on the sidelines.

The Australian Open champion cannot be underestimated, something that’s underlined by his outright price of 7/4.

Young guns to threaten; Djokovic is no joke

Britian’s big hope in the French Open comes in the form of Jack Draper. The 23-year-old reached the Madrid Open final at the end of April and backed that up with a quarter-final run at the Italian Open.

Draper already boasts some big wins this year, including victory at the Indian Wells back in March.

Another name to watch is Norway’s Casper Ruud who went on to win the Madrid Open against Draper.

Holger Rune, who defeated Alcaraz to win the Barcelona Open in mid-April, is also worth keeping an eye on.

Of all the contenders, the man with the most eyeballs on him will undoubtedly be Novak Djokovic. The 38-year-old is still operating at an elite level is a danger to everyone in the draw.

The Serb still isn’t satisfied with the amount of silverware he has won, meaning we can’t put a fourth French Open title past him.
