Southwell best bet: Fieldsman can defy advancing years to outrace hefty odds

There’s plenty in with a shout of landing this competitive looking seven-furlong sprint, and the word in the Tipstrr camp is that the winner might just emerge from an unexpected quarter.

19:00 Southwell: Best Odds Guaranteed at BetMGM Handicap (7 furlongs)

There’s plenty in with a shout of landing this competitive looking seven-furlong sprint, and the word in the Tipstrr camp is that the winner could emerge from an unexpected quarter.

If the early market is a reliable yardstick, then we should prepare ourselves for a two-horse race between Meng Tian and Urban Dandy, both of whom are available either side of the 11/4 mark at the time of writing.

Planet Sport Bet Daily Special: Bet £20+ cash on any runner in the race and if Urban Dandy wins by more than 1 length, get a £5 Free Bet

Question marks hang over both, however, with Meng Tian returning from a five-month break after going winless in 20 outings since 2022, while Urban Dandy has also gone 13 races without success over the last calendar year.

Furthermore, their short prices give their eight rivals enhanced each-way value, especially with some mainstream bookmakers offering four places.

Bottom-weight Warrior Square responded well to a first-time visor to make him the only last-time-out winner in the line-up, while Mine That Ship also responded well to a change of stable during his seven-month lay-off to reappear with an encouraging half-length second at Chelmsford 12 days ago.

The buzz among Tipstrr’s each-way specialists, however, surrounds the veteran in the line-up, with Tony Carroll’s Fieldsman looking more than capable of defying his 12-year-old legs in this company.

Suggested best bet: Fieldsman in the 19:00 at Southwell

This proven campaigner has rolled back the years since returning from a three-month break in December, registering figures of 122132 during a 10-week purple patch.

The first of those two wins was over this course and distance just before Christmas, and he was equally impressive when landing a 12-runner affair over the same trip at Wolverhampton in January.

Excuses could be made for his most recent appearance here nine days ago, when he was ridden too aggressively in the early stages of a 12-runner handicap over a longer one-mile trip, and promptly had nothing left in the tank in the final stages.

With the exception of the shock 100/1 winner, all of the six horses that beat him in that 0-62 event were rated higher than anything that he will face in this 0-58 race, plus he now benefits from the seven-pound claim of Mollie Gunn on his back.

If she can treat him more sympathetically over his preferred trip here, then the veteran has the capabilities to make his current double-digit price look very tasty coming into the final furlong.
