Ayr top betting tip: Charlie Johnston yard looking for Espressoo boost

After guiding us to a tasty 11/2 winner yesterday, Steve Jones, who runs CD Systems Daily Bargain on Tipstrr, is looking for more of the same with his selection from Ayr’s Tuesday evening meeting.

20:00 Ayr: Book United Scotland Summer Raceday Handicap

This looks a good choice of race for Espressoo’s return to action after a break of 225 days. He clearly goes very well fresh because he won on his first two outings of last season, the first of which was an all-the-way six-length romp in a maiden over this very trip.

He was ridden by Joe Fanning with the partnership coming out of the inside draw in stall 1, a set of circumstances that is replicated perfectly here, with Espressoo now seven pounds better off than last summer.

Espressoo’s handicap debut, shortly after her maiden success, saw her take a Class 4 handicap over seven furlongs at Chelmsford, and her hat-trick bid came in a strong Class 3 handicap at York a couple of weeks later.

There she had to settle for a close second of 11 (beaten a head) behind Heredia, who followed up by winning the Class 2 Sandringham Stakes from 27 rivals at Royal Ascot off seven pounds higher.

Suggested bet: Espressoo to win the 20:00 at Ayr

Espresso loves to race prominently, although she doesn’t need to lead, so stall 1 is ideal, and almost all her best turf form has come over this distance on good ground.

The Charlie Johnston-trained filly is one of only two four-year-olds in this field of older handicappers and she looks sure to be primed for a big run first-time back, just as she was at this time last year.

Next best bet: Manigordo to win the 20:00 at Ayr
Of the others, Manigordo has a very handy draw just outside Espressoo in stall 2 and, is likely to come on again for his seasonal return, which saw him run  fourth of 12 over seven furlongs at Musselburgh, where the cut in the ground would have gone against him.
He ended last season by running third of 13 in a higher-graded Class 2 at Thirsk where the ground was good. and that effort came on the back of two successive seven-furlong wins on good ground, thelatter of which was up in Class 3.
The yard’s main rider, David Allan, is aboard Judgement Call today but Jason Hart won his only ride on Manigordo at Musselburgh last August.
