Spielberg Profile

Name Spielberg
Born Feb 03, 2018
Age 3 years

Star trainer Bob Baffert had been looking to direct Spielberg towards Kentucky Derby glory, but he fell just short of qualifying.

Spielberg is a three-year-old colt who had started the season strongly, but a poor run in the Florida Derby ruled him out of the Churchill Downs showpiece.

2021 Road to the Kentucky Derby

Spielberg finished in 31st place on the 2021 Road to the Kentucky Derby, having picked up 17 qualifying points. This will see him miss out on the Churchill Downs showpiece.

The colt's first set of Derby qualifying points came from his third-place effort in the September 26 American Pharoah Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita. Spielberg finished behind Rombauer in second and winner Get Her Number, both of whom are also on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard.

In the race, Spielberg broke well and showed early speed between rivals. He dropped back off the rail and moved between the field at the quarter pole before crossing the line. With that third-place finish, he picked up two qualifying Derby points.

His biggest set of qualifying points came from his victory in the December 19 Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) at Los Alamitos Thoroughbred, where he registered a 101 Speed Figure.

The runner stalked off the rail early in the race before moving up as the field exited the backstretch. He chased two to three-wide into the stretch, challenged The Great One, and moved ahead to win. The Great One finished in second, followed by Petruchio and Red Flag. With his Los Alamitos Futurity victory, Spielberg was awarded 10 qualifying points.

In one of his most recent races, he finished fourth in the January 30 Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita, which gave him an additional qualifying point. In that outing, Spielberg bumped from inside at the start. He eventually came four-wide into the stretch but could never rally to move ahead. The Robert B. Lewis was won by Medina Spirit.

Spielburg picked up a further four points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby when finishing second behind Essential Quality in the Southwest Stakes on February 27.

Baffert aimed to secure the remaining qualifying points Spielberg needed by running him in the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park on March 27, but an eighth-place finish was well off the pace.

Spielberg's career performances

Spielberg first debuted back on August 8, 2020, when he finished runner-up in a maiden special weight race at Del Mar. He demonstrated solid speed to kick off his racing career, registering a 95 Speed Figure.

Spielberg's second career performance came in the September 7 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity (G1) at Del Mar, where he also finished second. The colt set the pace under pressure and he was challenged around the bend before moving inside on the stretch. He was passed up by Dr. Schivel and couldn't recover in the final furlong. The third-place spot in that race went to Weston.

After Spielberg's third-place finish in the American Pharoah Stakes on September 26, he went on to win a November 1 maiden special weight race at Del Mar, where he put up a career-best 103 Speed Figure. In that race, he finished ahead of Parnelli in second, Allabouthtemoney in third and The Great One in fourth.

Spielberg's connections

Spielberg has a strong team of connections around him, starting with Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. Spielberg was just one more of the trainer's runners on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Baffert has more than 3,100 career wins from 13,500-plus starts. His purse earnings sit above $310million.

Bob Baffert trains Spielberg

Baffert was awarded the 2015 Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer, the fourth time he had claimed the prize. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame back in 2009, and in 2020, he ranked third by earnings among all trainers. Some of the big victories his horses were responsible for include the 2020 Kentucky Derby, the 2018 Belmont Stakes and the 2018 Preakness Stakes.

Spielberg's stablemates include Authentic, Mucho Gusto, Improbable, Nadal, Gamine and Maximum Security.

He is owned by SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Golconda Stables, Siena Farm and Robert Masterson.

The partnership's top horse is undoubtedly Spielberg, but their other runners include Freedom Fighter, Classier and Savile Row.

Spielberg has gone through a few different riders during his career so far. Luis Saez joined the runner in his third-place outing in the American Pharoah Stakes, while Abel Cedillo was in the saddle for the runner-up performance in the Runhappy Del Mar Futurity.

Flavien Prat has also joined the racehorse on a few occasions, including his victory in the Los Alamitos Futurity and fourth-place run in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes.

Spielberg's pedigree

Spielberg is from the sire Union Rags and dam Miss Squeal.

Chadds Ford Stable's Union Rags is a son of Dixie Union. The runner was trained by Michael Matz and his regular rider was jockey John Velazquez.

Union Rags retired with a career record of 5-1-1 from eight starts, and his final purse earnings sit at $1.8million. His last performance before being retired was a victory in the 2012 Belmont Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park, which followed a seventh-place run in that year's Kentucky Derby.

Union Rags also won the Champagne Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park in 2011, along with the 2011 Three Chimneys Saratoga Special Stakes (G2) and the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2). He finished runner-up in the Grey Goose Breeders Cup Juvenile (G1) at Churchill Downs in 2011.

Union Rags ranked 35th by earnings in 2011 and 25th in 2012.

G. Watts Humphrey Jr.'s Miss Squeal was trained by George R. Arnold, II. She was retired with a career record of 3-1-1 from 17 races and her final purse earnings sit at $108,966.

Her last performance before retirement was an eighth-place run in an allowance optional claiming race on November 30, 2014, at Churchill Downs. This followed on from a victory in another at Indiana Grand Race Course.
