Euro 2024 qualifying treble: Spain, Portugal and Luxembourg to go goal-mad on Sunday

The international break continues on Sunday but don’t bash your head against the wall just yet – we might actually see some goal-mouth action.

England were a major let down last Friday night as the Three Lions produced a toothless display against the major international powerhouse of Malta.

Wales were no better on Saturday as the Dragons failed to produce any fire in their 1-1 draw away in Armenia.

Luckily, Sunday’s line-up actually offers some hope of entertainment. Spain and Portugal are taking on weak opposition, meaning goals should flow in both games.

You must also keep an eye on Luxembourg. Don’t laugh – we’re serious.

Here’s our treble ahead of a promising day of action.

Portugal vs Iceland (7.45pm GMT)

You want goals? Portugal are the team to follow.

Roberto Martinez and his men have enjoyed an outstanding qualifying campaign, winning all nine of their games while scoring 34 goals in the process.

Do the maths. Thirty-four goals divided by nine games is an average of 3.7 goals per game. And don’t forget to throw in Iceland’s poor record away from home to the equation.

The heroes of the 2016 European Championships have conceded 10 goals across their last four outings on the road.

If Cristiano Ronaldo starts, we’re backing the Al-Nassr man to bag at least a couple. If not, Portugal with a -2 handicap is our recommendation.

Tip: Portugal -2 handicap

Spain vs Georgia (7.45 GMT)

Since losing to Scotland, Spain have become one of the most in-form teams in Europe. It’s quite incredible how motivating a loss against the Jocks can be.

Take the last five games for instance. Spain have won them all, scoring 19 goals, conceding two and keeping three clean sheets.

The previous meeting between the Spaniards and Georgia ended with a 7-1 demolition… away in Tbilisi.

Sunday’s encounter will be played in Valladolid and we’re expecting the home crowd to enjoy another goal-fest.

Spain to score over 3.5 goals is surely the way to go as the hosts look to make a statement of intent ahead of the Euros.

Tip: Spain to score over 3.5 goals

Liechtenstein vs Luxembourg (7.45pm GMT)

While you’re switching the channels between Portugal and Spain, make sure to get your phone out and follow Luxembourg via our Planet Sport score centre.

Before you start laughing, hear us out.

Now it’s true that Liechtenstein have won three of the last four head-to-head meetings, but you have to take into consideration Luxembourg’s incredible transformation over the last couple of years.

Once harmless minnows, the side have become qualification contenders and currently sit third in the group – just five points behind the top two.

Luxembourg smashed Bosnia 4-1 in their last outing on Thursday. In fact, they have scored 11 goals across their last four international victories.

Liechtenstein, on the other hand, have lost every game in their qualifying campaign, conceding 27 goals and scoring once in the process.

Bearing all that in mind, we’re backing Luxembourg to win to nil.

Tip: Luxembourg to win to nil
