  • Xavi Hernandez Hails Barcelona Resurgence In Victory Over PSG

Xavi Hernandez hails Barcelona resurgence in victory over PSG

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez lauded his team's thrilling 3-2 triumph against Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash.

The win in Paris, marked by Andreas Christensen's crucial header in the 77th minute, showcased Barcelona's resurgence on the European stage, with Xavi expressing confidence in their ability to rival the continent's elite once more.

"We had time to prepare for this game and everything turned out very well, in defence and in attack," Xavi remarked, reflecting on the team's performance at the Parc des Princes. "We are proud of the team. Paris played very well, but we kept their threat to a minimum."

Despite PSG's rapid turnaround in the second half, with goals from Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha, Barcelona displayed resilience, as Raphinha and later Christensen secured the victory.

"It is a great victory against one of the best teams in the world," Xavi emphasized, acknowledging the significance of their achievement. "It is very difficult to defend against this team because of how they press you, but we did it very well."

Looking ahead to the return leg at Montjuic on Tuesday, Xavi acknowledged the challenge awaiting Barcelona but maintained faith in his squad's capabilities.

"The players believe in themselves," he stated confidently, underlining their conviction and determination. "They have this opportunity, and if they play in the same way they will get chances. Nothing is done but we can be proud. This match shows that Barca are very much alive."

This victory marks Barcelona's first appearance in the Champions League quarter-finals since 2020 and their first away win in the knockout phase since 2019, signifying a notable resurgence under Xavi's leadership.

In the midst of Barcelona's unbeaten streak in the 12 games since Xavi's announcement of departure at the end of the season, the team's performance against PSG serves as a testament to their renewed vigour and competitive spirit on the European stage.

Barcelona will next be in La Liga action on Saturday when they travel to face Cadiz at Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla.
