VfB Stuttgart secures Leonidas Stergiou on permanent deal

VfB Stuttgart has bolstered its defensive lineup for the foreseeable future by securing the services of Leonidas Stergiou on a permanent basis.

The Swiss defender, who has been on loan from FC St. Gallen for the 2023/24 season, has inked a contract that extends until 30 June 2028, solidifying his commitment to the Cannstatt club.

"Leo has handled the step up to the Bundesliga very well and underlined his value to the team on multiple occasions," said VfB sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth, as quoted by the club's official website.

"We've been just as impressed by his footballing abilities as his professional attitude.

"Leo has always been there when we needed him and continued to work hard on his development, even when he wasn't playing much. We're pleased that Leo will continue to wear the VfB shirt in the future."

Stergiou's contributions have been notable throughout his loan spell, demonstrating his value both defensively and offensively.

His adeptness in the backline has been a key asset for VfB, while his attacking prowess was on full display when he scored his maiden goal for the club during a 3-1 home victory over Bayern Munich.

Having featured in 15 Bundesliga matches and three DFB Cup ties this season, Stergiou has proven himself as a reliable and versatile player for VfB Stuttgart.

"I'm very happy with the trust that has been placed in me," said Leonidas Stergiou.

"I want to continue to justify that with good performances. I've learned a lot this year. I needed a bit of time to settle initially, but I joined an outstanding team.

"For me, it was about learning a lot and being there when I was needed. The coaching team and the entire staff also deserve credit. I'm very happy with how the season has gone."
