Brentford manager Thomas Frank lamented his side's poor luck with injuries this season after they were beaten 2-0 by Sheffield United on Saturday.

The Bees sank to their second consecutive defeat within a week at the hands of Sheffield United thanks to a superb James McAtee strike at the end of the first half which handed Chris Wilder his first victory since returning to the Blades while giving them a first home triumph of the season.

Top scorer Bryan Mbeumo was the latest player to be ruled out for Brentford after suffering a knock to the ankle earlier in the week.

He is one of eight players to be missing for Frank but the boss is determined to navigate his way through the testing spell.

After the 1-0 defeat, he told a press conference: “Injuries is part of the game but I feel very unlucky with the squad we have.

“It is a thin squad, I love my players I think they are very honest and work very hard and we don’t have the same depth as other teams, and what they have produced so far is incredible. I saw a lot of effort today again.

“Of course it is big when you have eight plus Ivan out, that’s nine players but it is what it is and we will find a way.

“These players give everything, I see Wissa, Maupay, Lewis-Potter do everything they can to try to be decisive, unfortunately today they didn’t succeed.”

Sheffield United claimed their second victory of the season in the week that Paul Heckingbottom was sacked by the Blades with the club sitting rock bottom of the Premier League.

Wilder was happy to give the fans a win after a whirlwind week at Bramall Lane but is only going to take it one game at a time in a bid to keep United in the division.

He said: “The emotional energy with what’s happened this week with the manager leaving so what that does to players and staff and a new guy comes in even though I’m not a new guy.

“Emotionally it’s tough but quickly we have to get down to business which we did.

“It’s small steps and I’m not looking beyond next week, I’m really not. I’m not thinking about anything else, we talked about it and we’ll go into every game with a game plan, attitude, approach, we are going to try get a result in every game.”
