Saul Niguez makes history in Atletico Madrid victory over Dortmund

Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez became the club's eighth-most capped player of all time in the quarter-final first leg Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund.

Saúl reached 421 appearances for the club in the 2-1 win over the German outfit. With this figure, the 29-year-old equals Juan Carlos Arteche in eighth place in the ranking of players with the most games played for our club. The midfielder, born in Elche, reaches this impressive figure at 29 years of age and after more than a decade of commitment to the shirt.

The Spain international arrived at the club in the 2008/09 season. On 8 March 2012 he made his debut with the first team in a Europa League match against Besiktas at the Vicente Calderón. Almost the same day, but 12 years and 48 goals later, he is the 8th player who has worn the Atleti jersey more times than any other player.

In this time, the 29-year-old has won 2 UEFA Europa Leagues (2011/12 and 2017/18), 1 league (2020/21), 1 Copa del Rey (2012/13), 1 Spanish Super Cup (2014/15) and 1 European Super Cup (2018/19).
