Odds tumble on Eddie Howe to get the boot after difficult week for Newcastle

Eddie Howe of Newcastle 30 Apr 2023
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe’s odds to be the next Premier League manager to be sacked have tumbled to following the Magpies’ disappointing 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday.
The loss on the south coast follows back-to-back Champions League defeats to Borussia Dortmund which has left Newcastle bottom of their group and qualification for the round of 16 now seems unlikely.
The bookies now have Howe at 6/1 to go next, behind Sheff United's Paul Heckingbottom (2/1), Manchester United's Erik ten Hag (3/1) and Burnley's Vincent Kompany (4/1).
Just a few weeks ago several outlets had Howe as high as 66/1 to be the next manager to face the chop.
However, Howe has been without several key players recently, the Magpies had 11 first team absentees at the weekend as they lined up without regulars such as Alexander Isak and Sven Botman.
Howe said: "We have a whole host of players out and we need them back. Some of them are long term injuries and we won't have them back for a long period of time, so we just have to accept that."
Despite the poor week for Newcastle, Howe’s position seems safe at the moment, but they do face Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham in their next four league games, so his position could be one to watch.
Meanwhile, Ten Hag is still under pressure as he is 3/1 to get the chop next despite four wins in five in the league.
The Dutchman’s odds have drifted since last week, where his odds were 5/4 and he was the favourite to be the next managerial casualty of the season.
However, Ten Hag will be one to watch after the international break with must win Champions League fixtures alongside some tough tests in the Premier League.
The unwanted title of favourite in the sack race goes to Sheffield United’s Heckingbottom, who has odds as low as 7/4, despite the Blades picking up four points in their last two games.
Burnley’s Kompany is growing under more pressure following a fifth consecutive league defeat this weekend and his odds have dropped to 4/1 from 8/1.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola is breathing a sigh of relief following his side’s superb victory at the weekend, with his odds coming out to 8/1 from 9/2.
