Newcastle striker Callum Wilson could be set for a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, while Eddie Howe is unsure about the progress of a £25million move for Watford striker Joao Pedro.

England international Wilson was withdrawn during the second half of Sunday's 3-3 Premier League draw with champions Manchester City and the Magpies now face an anxious wait to discover the extent of the damage.

Asked if that situation could change the club's transfer business, Howe said: "Well, I think we will wait and see the extent of Callum's injury before answering that question, really.

"I don't think it will be serious, but with hamstrings, you've got to be very, very careful, not just with Callum, but with any player.
"As I say, we will wait and see the results and see how long he's going to be out."

On Monday reports were rife that 20-year-old Watford star Joao Pedro was on his way to Newcastle and would be unveiled before the Carabao Cup match against Tranmere on Tuesday night.

"I think that's not entirely accurate, but I'm not dealing with these things minute to minute, day to day," said Howe.
"I'm sort of in the background hearing what's happening, but I don't think that's correct."
