Norwich City vs Burnley news: Relegation six-pointer a must-win for the Canaries

Norwich, on an eight-match winless run, host Burnley and it looks like last-chance saloon for Dean Smith's rock-bottom side.

With games running out, it is becoming desperate for Norwich.
Dean Smith's side have failed to win a league match since January and they are seven points from safety and six behind their opponents in the final relegation spot.

Burnley, in contrast, go into the game on the back of a much-needed win against Everton, a result which sucked the Toffees firmly into the relegation mix and reignited the Clarets' hopes of preserving their Premier League status.

Who is the ref for Norwich City vs Burnley?

Michael Oliver is the man in the middle for the relegation six-pointer, with Andy Madley being the fourth official and John Brooks on VAR duty.

Oliver, who has taken charge of two FA Cup finals, has been in charge of 21 Premier League clashes this season and has refereed these sides on one occasion each in 2021/22.
He took charge of Burnley's ill-tempered 1-1 draw with Leeds in August, which resulted in him brandishing seven yellow cards, his highest total this season.
The very next matchday he oversaw Norwich's 1-0 defeat by Arsenal, with the Northumberland-born official dishing out four yellows.

2021/22 Premier League record: Matches (21), yellow cards (64), red cards (4), penalties awarded (5)

Recent form

As already touched upon, neither side is in a rich vein of form as their league placings attest.
Burnley are marginally ahead in the form table with a single win from their last five outings, which came in their last game, while Norwich have one point from five matches, escaping Brighton with a 0-0 draw.
Nevertheless, it was the Canaries' first Premier League clean sheet since their victory against Watford in January, so there is at least something for Smith's side to build on.

Players in form

Milot Rashica could provide the spark that has been missing from Norwich City this season. While the winger hasn't set the Premier League alight, he has hinted that he is capable of moments of magic and this match could be the perfect opportunity for him to finally make a telling impact.

He has had a good run in the team, starting 10 of the Canaries' last 11 league matches, scoring againstĀ Liverpool and providing an assist in a 3-0 win over Watford.

Burnley's top scorer this season is Ivorian attacker Maxwel Cornet, who has seven goals in 19 appearances.

He produced a goal and an assist againstĀ Everton and will fancy his chances against a depleted back line that has conceded 63 goals in 30 games this season.

Past meetings

The reverse fixture at Turf Moor finished goalless - it was the first time in 44 meetings the clash had failed to produce a goal.
They have met twice more in the Premier League, in the 2019/20 season, with Sean Dyche's men victorious 2-0 on both occasions.
Overall, since their first coming together in 1934, there have been 15 Norwich wins, 21 Burnley wins and eight draws.

Managers' thoughts

Norwich boss Dean Smith knows time is running out for his side: "We are running out of games, we know that.

"We would like to be higher in the table and we would like our form to be better, but it is about doing the right things and working hard.
"We are getting into last chance saloon now, but that is an opportunity and hopefully the players grasp that opportunity."

Burnley boss Sean Dyche on the importance of following up their victory over Everton on Wednesday night: "It was a tight one the other night, we got on the right side of it, showed a really solid mentality, and that's got to be the same for the remaining nine games.

"The last one doesn't give you the next one, so we've got to go down to Norwich and perform well again, and actually add to a performance the details I think are relevant."

Predicted teams

Norwich come into the game the fresher of the two as they did not play in midweek. However they have far more injury concerns than Burnley.
Forward Adam Idah (knee) and centre-half Andrew Omobamidele (back) remain sidelined, while American striker Josh Sargent (ankle) continues to be monitored after sitting out last week's goalless draw at Brighton.
Lukas Rupp and full-backs Max Aarons and Brandon Williams are all available but manager Dean Smith is contending with some illness issues within the squad.
Sean Dyche will be without Iceland's Johann Berg Gudmundsson (calf) and Erik Pieters (knee) as they go in search of back-to-back wins. Ben Mee remains unavailable having missed each of the last four games due to a fibula issue.

Norwich City possible starting line-up: Krul; Byram, Hanley, Gibson, Giannoulis; Gilmour, Normann, Lees Melou; Rashica, Pukki, Rowe.

Burnley possible starting line-up: Pope; Roberts, Tarkowski, Collins, Taylor; McNeil, Westwood, Brownhill, Cornet; Rodriguez, Weghorst.

Prediction for Norwich City vs Burnley

Norwich know their fate will be sealed with defeat in this match. However, they have been embroiled in a relegation fight almost from the first minute of the season and it has made little difference to their results. Burnley possess the quality in the forward positions, they possess the confidence and come Sunday tea-time they'll also possess the three points.
