Borussia Dortmund's Mateu Morey and Marius Wolf to leave Bundesliga club

In the midst of preparing for their clash against Real Madrid in the Champions League final, Borussia Dortmund face significant departures from their roster.

Marco Reus set the tone for the changes by announcing his departure earlier this month, and now, the club's sporting director, Sebastien Kehl, has confirmed the exits of Spanish defender Mateu Morey and winger Marius Wolf, both of whom will not have their contracts renewed.

Kehl, speaking to 'Ruhr Nachrichten', declared, "We have informed Mateu Morey and Marius Wolf that we will not be renewing their contracts."

Morey, 24, arrived at Signal Iduna Park in 2019 from FC Barcelona's youth academy, showing promise as a young full-back.

Despite initial struggles and injuries, he rose to prominence after seizing the right-back position following Achraf Hakimi's departure in 2020.

However, a series of unfortunate injuries, including a cruciate ligament rupture in 2020, hampered his progress. Kehl empathized, stating, "He has been very unlucky with injuries and was unable to demonstrate his full potential for an extended period."

Morey's determination saw him return to the pitch this season, albeit in a limited capacity, playing nine matches across the reserves and first team. Yet, with his contract set to expire on June 30, Dortmund bid farewell to a player once seen as a cornerstone of their defensive line-up.

As Dortmund navigate through these changes, the focus remains on the impending Champions League final, where they aim to overcome Real Madrid and etch their name in football history.

However, the departures of Morey and Wolf serve as reminders of the transient nature of football, where players come and go, leaving behind memories of their time on the pitch.
