Liverpool vs Wolves news: Relentless Reds can make Man City work for title glory

In order to take the Premier League crown, Jurgen Klopp’s men need Man City to drop points against Aston Villa, before keeping up their end of the bargain and beating Wolves.

Liverpool have to win on the final day to have any chance of winning the title, and that's the message Jurgen Klopp will want to get across first and foremost.

The Reds faced this exact same scenario three seasons ago and passed the test by seeing off Wolves 2-0 at Anfield.

On that occasion it proved irrelevant after Manchester City won 4-1 at Brighton but if Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa can somehow stop Pep Guaridola's side at the Etihad on Sunday, the Reds must make sure a slip-up by the leaders is a fatal one.

Only a win will do for Liverpool barring an extraordinary flip in the goal difference - currently +6 in City's favour - so their mission is clear: bank the three points and hope Villa can do them a massive favour.

Who is the ref for Liverpool v Wolves

Anthony Taylor is the man in the middle at Anfield.

The Chester official last took charge of Liverpool in their 2-2 draw at Man City, a game in which five of the yellows he showed were to players in red shirts.
More recently than that, he oversaw Wolves' 1-0 loss at Burnley. He booked four players in that one which is just under his average for the season.

Season stats 2021/22: All matches (40), yellows (150), red (7), penalties (12)

Recent form

Liverpool made sure the title race went to the final day as a much-changed team eked out a 2-1 win at Southampton on Tuesday night after going a goal down early.
That's the third time in five matches they've come from behind to win after overturning a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 at Villarreal in the Champions League and fighting back for a 2-1 success at Aston Villa.
Liverpool have dropped just two points at home since Christmas. That came in the 1-1 draw with Spurs earlier this month.
Wolves are ending the season on a real downturn after four defeats and two draws in their latest six games.
That run included a 5-1 thumping by Man City and a highly disappointing 1-1 home draw with Norwich last weekend.
They did at least manage to fight back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Chelsea two weeks ago.

Liverpool and Wolves players in form

Sadio Mane has been Liverpool's main source of goals over the last two months.
The Senegalese frontman has netted eight times in his last 12 games and has 15 for the season in the Premier League.
Sadio Mane Liverpool
Luis Diaz has contributed goals, assists and attacking vigour since joining in the January transfer window while Thiago Alcantara has been the standout performer in midfield.
Alisson Becker and Manchester City's Ederson both have 20 clean sheets for the season and the Liverpool goalkeeper will be keen to register another shutout and collect the Golden Glove award.
It's hard to find many Wolves players in form but Ryan Ait-Nouri took the eye at Stamford Bridge and capped a decent performance with the goal against Norwich last time.

Previous meetings

Wolves 0-1 Liverpool (December 04, 2021)

Liverpool's cult frontman Divock Origi will leave the club this summer and the Reds will miss his last-gasp super sub act, one that he performed here.
The game looked to be heading to a 0-0 draw after a stoic defensive performance from the hosts.
But with time nearly up, Mo Salah set up Origi to swivel and thump the ball past Jose Sa to give the visitors a last-gasp win. Klopp hailed the Belgian striker "a legend" when interviewed later.

Wolves 0-1 Liverpool (March 15, 2021)

Liverpool were rocking so badly ahead of this fixture last season that the then defending title winners started the match in eighth place.
They ended it in sixth, still five points off the top four, after former Wolves star Diogo Jota struck in first-half injury time.
Wolves had more possession and more shots on target but Klopp was more than happy with the stat that really mattered - the goal count - after the Reds had lost six of their previous seven Premier League matches.

Liverpool 4-0 Wolves (December 06, 2020)

Before the Reds suffered their mid-season crash, they ran out comfortable 4-0 winners at Anfield - a game that saw fans (although only 2,000 of them) allowed back to Anfield for the first time since March due to the pandemic.
Their presence certainly seemed to lift the hosts, who went in front after 24 minutes through Salah.
Liverpool put the game to bed after the break as Gini Wijnaldum curled in a second on 58, Joel Matip headed a third after 67 and Nelson Semedo put through his own goal 12 minutes from time.
It took the hosts' record at home to a staggering 31 wins and a draw from their previous 32 league matches at Anfield.

Manager's thoughts

Jurgen Klopp said: "It's our last home game of the season. The atmosphere will be outstanding. We'll try to use it. We have to do our job. Football is a tricky game sometimes. We'll see but you have to focus on yourselves."

Bruno Lage said: "I'm happy with what we did but when you look back at the last six games, we don't have the points that we should have.

"We go there trying to give a different image than we did in the last six games. We have a good record in away games and good performances against these kind of teams."

Predicted Liverpool v Wolves teams

The Reds are still treading cautiously with three of their big stars - Salah (groin), Virgil van Dijk (knee) and Fabinho (hamstring).

Klopp wants them to play some part to get their rhythm going again after they missed the Tuesday night win at Southampton but he won't take risks ahead of next Saturday's Champions League final.

Salah may push for inclusion as he tries to hold off Son Heung-min in the Golden Boot race. His tally of 22 is one better than the Spurs man's tally.
Joe Gomez limped off against Southampton with an ankle knock but could still make the squad.

Possible Liverpool starting line-up: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Konate, Matip, Thiago, Henderson, Keita, Mane, Jota, Diaz.

For Wolves, Romain Saiss, Max Kilman and Nelson Semedo aren't available.
Daniel Podence may continue his comeback after returning against Norwich following a six-week absence.

Possible Wolves starting line-up: Sa, Boly, Coady, Toti, Jonny, Neves, Moutinho, Dendoncker, Ait-Nouri, Neto, Jimenez.

Liverpool v Wolves prediction

It could ultimately be a day of disappointment for Liverpool and the end of their quadruple dream but you can hardly feel too sorry for them given that a Cup treble remains on the cards.

And if news comes through that Man City have a comfortable lead over Aston Villa, the Reds are professional enough to still keep playing for the win.
They haven't exactly been steamrollering teams of late but Wolves are in poor form and the hosts can take this by a 2-0 or 3-0 margin.
