Jurgen Klopp shortens dramatically in Premier League sack race as seven-year itch talk ignites

Could Reds boss Jurgen Klopp leave again after seven years?

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has admitted he would be asking "questions about the manager" after last week's debacle in Naples. 

The 4-1 humbling against Napoli sent a shockwave through Anfield after a start to the season which nobody saw coming.

Klopp has had plenty of time to reflect on the "horrors" of their Champions League defeat after the weekend's date with Wolves was postponed after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

And there was a huge reaction from the bookies who have now priced the German up at 12/1 in the Premier League sack race.

Klopp, who has been in place at Anfield for almost seven years, was a 66/1 shot ahead of the defeat against Luciano Spalletti's men.

But after last week's events, the Reds chief has seen his odds slashed dramtically.

Brendan Rodgers at Leicester is the most likely to be sacked at just 2/5. But Klopp has moved markedly in the market and he has admitted he has questions to answer.
"I only read about 10 words of what was said about us, but most of them were fair probably," said Klopp at Monday's press conference.
"I watched the game back, and (if it was me) I'd have asked a lot of questions about the manager and the players."

Irritable Klopp

Those questions were not forthcoming in the Kirkby briefing and given Klopp's irritation with a photographer, that line of questioning was well avoided.

An Irked Klopp said: "If you could just for a second stop taking pictures then I'll understand the question…
"You with the camera!" Klopp snapped, pointing at the photographer. "Aahhhhhh."
But a defeat against Ajax at Anfield on Tuesday night will ramp up the scrutiny on Klopp.

The Liverpool boss undoubtedly has an injury list that is not helping his cause.

Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, Ibrahima Konate and now Andy Robertson are all unavailable.
But injuries aside, Klopp needs to get some wins on the board otherwise the 'burnout' theories will start to emerge.
Speaking after Klopp had appeared in front of the press, Joel Matip did his best to bat those off on Monday.

Seven-year itch

But talk of the seven-year itch will no doubt ramp up.
In his first ever managerial role at Mainz he managed to get the club into the Bundesliga. But in Klopp's seventh season Mainz were relegated and the 55-year-old resigned.
Klopp then went to Borussia Dortmund and took the German side to the Champions League final and won back-to-back Bundesliga titles.
But again in his seventh season at Signal Iduna Park things went wrong. Dortmund's star man Robert Lewandowski left and BVB ended up finishing seventh, and Klopp walked away.
Could history repeat itself for a third time?
Klopp, who signed a new deal until 2026 in April, is now in the seventh season at Anfield and things have certainly not started too well.
