Phil Neville one step closer to Inter Miami appointment as Diego Alonso departs
Gary Neville defends the appointment of the former England women’s boss, while Eddie Hearn accuses Ryan Garcia of running scared.
SOCCER: Gary Neville has rounded on the critics who say his brother has only got the Inter Miami head coach role because he is a friend of co-owner David Beckham. Phil Neville was appointed yesterday on a two-year deal, bringing to an end a disappointing reign with the England women's team.
"I want him to do well because I know how hard he works at it, he said. "The reason Phil gets opportunities is through his hard work and thinking about [football] every single day."
Phil Neville and Beckham were teammates at Manchester United and are joint owners of English fourth-tier side Salford City. However, Gary said that will count for nothing if his brother fails to deliver results on the pitch.
"I know my brother and I know David Beckham - he wouldn't give his mate a job if he thought that he couldn't do it. It's a serious job over there that needs to be done, and if he isn't doing it well then he'll know what's going to happen."
