Girona eye Barcelona veteran Marcos Alonso as contract nears expiry

Girona FC have emerged as an eager suitor, casting their gaze toward the hallowed halls of FC Barcelona.

The Catalan outfit, already poised to rekindle their relationship with Oriol Romeu, have now set their sights on another Blaugrana player: Marcos Alonso, according to journalist Alex Pintanel.

Alonso, 33, the seasoned left-back, has graced the Camp Nou since his free transfer from Chelsea in 2022. His debut season under Xavi Hernandez's stewardship was a revelation, with the versatile Spaniard even slotting into the heart of defence when needed. As Barca clinched La Liga title in 2022-23, Alonso's adaptability and commitment stood out.

However, the tides shifted this past campaign. Injuries and intensified competition relegated Alonso to the shadows. Barca opted not to renew his contract, which expires on June 30.

The left-back will soon depart as a free agent, leaving a void that Girona aim to fill.

Sporting director Quique Carcel views Alonso as a prime candidate to bolster their left-back position. With Real Madrid potentially reclaiming Miguel Gutierrez, Girona seek a seasoned campaigner who can thrive in both domestic and European competitions.

Atletico Madrid, too, have long coveted Alonso, but now they face a spirited challenge from their Catalan counterparts.

As the UEFA Champions League beckons, Alonso stands at a crossroads. Will he don the red and white stripes of Girona or join Atleti's ranks? The decision rests with the veteran defender. One thing is certain: the summer transfer window promises intrigue, and Alonso's next move will be watched closely across Spain.
