FIFA Best Awards 2022: Chelsea win treble while Robert Lewandowski claims top prize

Robert Lewandowski has won FIFA’s Player of the Year award for the second year running after beating Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah to the prize.

Almost two months ago, the Bayern Munich star was snubbed in the race for the Ballon d'Or as he finished second to Paris Saint-Germain's Lionel Messi.

On this occasion, it was the Pole who landed the top prize while Messi and Salah closed out the top three.

The 33-year-old was simply unstoppable in 2021 as he scored a total of 69 goals. What's more, Lewandowski broke Gerd Muller's near 50-year record for scoring the most Bundesliga goals in a calendar year, bagging 43 efforts in 34 games.

Elsewhere, it was a good day for Chelsea as Thomas Tuchel, Edouard Mendy and Emma Hayes all won awards.

Tuchel claimed the Coach of the Year prize after guiding Chelsea to Champions League glory despite taking charge of the club in January 2021. The German also took the team to the FA Cup final and won the 2021 UEFA Super Cup against Villarreal.
Mendy played a big part in that success and claimed the Goalkeeper of the Year award ahead of PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Meanwhile, Hayes was rewarded for leading Chelsea to a domestic treble as well as taking her side to the Champions League final - a game which ended in disappointment as Barcelona cruised to a 4-0 victory.
Speaking of the Catalan giants, it was their star midfielder Alexia Putellas who took the Women's Player of the Year award.
The 27-year-old led her side to a treble winning season - including that Champions League final victory over Chelsea.
Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler was the recipient of two prizes as the player won Goalkeeper of the Year as well as FIFA's Special Award.

The men also had a Special Award category and that prize went to Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo who was omitted from the 10-man shortlist for the main prize.

The forward received the accolade after surpassing Ali Daei's long-standing 109-goal record in international soccer. Ronaldo is currently on 115 goals after adding to his impressive total last October.

Speaking of scoring, Erik Lamela took the coveted Puskas Award. The former Tottenham winger, who now plays for Sevilla, was recognised for his rabona finish against Arsenal last March.
