Manchester United have spoken with current Ajax manager Erik ten Hag as the club steps up its search for Ralf Rangnick’s replacement.

The German was handed the role on an interim basis following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after three years at the helm.

With Rangnick promised a consultancy position after the season is over, the club need to find a replacement to take the team forward.
According to the PA news agency, the Red Devils have spoken to Erik ten Hag about the position and are expected to speak to other candidates as their search continues.
The 52-year-old is currently top of Eredivisie following Ajax's pulsating derby victory against Feyenoord at the weekend.

The Dutchman has been with Ajax since 2017 and has previously worked for Go Ahead Eagles, Bayern Munich II and Utrecht.

Arguably his biggest achievement to date was taking his current club to the Champions League semi-final back in 2019.

On that occasion, Ten Hag's men fell to a dramatic defeat against Tottenham who at the time were managed by Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentinian has since moved to Paris Saint-Germain and is also considered as one of the key candidates for the Manchester United job.

Pochettino has found himself under growing pressure in the French capital following the team's capitulation in the Champions League round-of-16 stage, plus their 3-0 defeat to AS Monaco last weekend.
The pair aren't the only major names to be linked with the Old Trafford post. Current Spain boss Luis Enrique and Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui have also been linked with a potential move to Manchester.
Thomas Tuchel, who was at one stage linked with the Red Devils, is no longer under consideration.
