Will Alphonso Davies commit his long-term future to Bayern Munich?

Alphonso Davies: ‘I want people to know about importance of helping refugees’
Real Madrid are reportedly very interested in landing the services of Canadian international left-back Alphonso Davies.
The 23-year-old is being eyed by Real manager, Carlo Ancelotti, with Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia failing to nail down a regular starting berth at left back so far this term.
The fact that Mendy and Garcia have been heavily rotated suggests Davies could be a long-term solution in this position.
Davies, who has 44 caps and 15 goals to his name so far, has shone ever since his seven-figure switch from Vancouver Whitecaps to Bayern in the summer of 2018.
In the last six years, Davies has established himself as an attack-minded left back, bringing immense speed and physicality to the table.
Could wage demands force Bayern to trade their Canadian asset?
Davies’ current contract with Bayern expires in 18 months’ time. This is one of the main reasons why Real are lurking in the background.
Reports suggest that Bayern have opened negotiations with Davies over a contract extension.
However, his alleged wage demands of circa €13-14m per year mean Bayern could be open to selling him this summer.
Real Madrid’s very own squad planner, Juni Calafat, is reported to have told Davies to rule out the prospect of putting pen to paper at the Allianz Arena. That’s because Real are said to be readying a formal offer for his signature.
Bayern are unlikely to even entertain a bid until this season is over, particularly with the German giants in a battle on domestic and continental fronts.
Davies’ current employers are seemingly in a two-horse race for the 2023/24 Bundesliga title. They’re priced as -357 favourites with Betano, while Bayer Leverkusen (+225) are still breathing heavily down their necks.
It is one of the most reputable licensed sites to bet online in Canada, while many other sportsbooks across Europe and North America are also finding it too close to call with just over a third of the season left to play.
As for their UEFA Champions League aspirations, Bayern are also in good shape as we head into the knockout stages of this season’s competition.
They’ve been given a rather fortuitous draw with Lazio in the last 16. English striker, Harry Kane, is also back to full fitness and in irrepressible form if Thomas Muller’s endorsement is anything to go by.
Therefore, they will be hoping 2023/24 can still end in some major silverware. Whether this would be enough to keep Davies in Germany remains to be seen, with his heart potentially set on being Real’s next left back for the next five-to-ten years – and who could blame him?
Is Davies lured by the prospect of being the next Roberto Carlos or Marcelo?
The hierarchy at the Santiago Bernabeu believe Davies can tick a host of boxes for their club, both on the field and from a commercial perspective in the North American market.
With Ancelotti agreeing a new contract until the summer of 2026, this may also give Davies a feeling of stability.
The experienced Italian is likely to be at the helm for at least the next two seasons, barring a major collapse in form.
Nevertheless, Bayern’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, remains bullish about the club’s prospects of holding onto their dynamic Canuck. Freund recently told German paper, Bild, that the club was confident that Davies “really enjoys” pulling on the Bayern jersey.
Losing Davies to Real would be another kick in the teeth for Bayern and German football as a whole. Only a few years ago, Bayern saw David Alaba move to the Bernabeu, leaving a huge void in the Bayern backline.
Davies’ departure would leave a similar void to be filled. His market value, with 12-18 months left on his current deal, is expected to be in the region of €70-75 million.
