Queens Park Rangers Football Club are an English professional football club based in Shepherd's Bush, West London, and play in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football.
QPR were founded in 1882 when St Jude's merged with Christchurch Rangers.
Known as QPR, the club have provided Premier League fans with plenty of entertainment during their brief spells in the top flight. They were on the losing side in one of the most iconic games in Premier League history, a 3-2 defeat to Manchester City when Sergio Aguero's goal won City their first Premier League title.
However, their most glorious years to date came some time before the Premier League era, in the 1960s and 1970s.
In the 1966/67 season, QPR not only managed to win the Third Division title, but also became the first club from that tier of English football to win the League Cup.
After winning the first League Cup final at Wembley Stadium and the only major trophy in their history to date, QPR achieved promotion to the top flight of English football in 1968.
Although relegation and promotion was to follow, QPR had proven that they could be a force in English football and the next generation of players carried on the legacy of the class of 1967.
In 1974, Dave Sexton joined the club as manager and he led them to a second-place finish in the 1975/76 First Division. QPR missed out on the league title by only one solitary point.
There was to be one last hurrah in a golden era for QPR as they reached the final of the 1982 FA Cup under the guidance of Terry Venables but lost 1-0 to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a replay.
QPR were founding members of the Premier League and clung on to their top flight status until the end of the 1995/96 season.
In July 1995, the club's top goalscorer, Les Ferdinand, was sold for a club record fee of £6 million to Newcastle United, which played a big part in the R's relegation that season.
QPR fell into a slump and dropped into the third tier of English football in 2001 and went into administration.
However, the club battled back into the Championship for the 2004/05 season under former player Ian Holloway.
Having had a string of owners and managers, QPR finally returned to the Premier League after winning the 2010/11 Championship title.
Neil Warnock, the manager who had led QPR up to the top flight, was replaced with Mark Hughes after a poor run of results, but Hughes did not fare significantly better if at all.
Bobby Zamora's goal in the 2014 play-off final against Derby County saw QPR go back up to the Premier League. However, they were relegated once again at the end of the 2014/15 season.
QPR have not been able to find a way back up to the top flight since and in the 2022/23 season, even flirted with relegation from the Championship.
In late October 2023, after a terrible start to the season where they sat second bottom of the Sky Bet Championship after six straight defeats, they sacked manager Gareth Ainsworth and replaced him with Marti Cifuentes.
Queens Park Rangers are a well-supported club with fan clubs across the world, but they are not considered one of the elite clubs of the Premier League and very much live in the shadow of their bigger West London neighbours.
QPR have several rivalries with fellow London clubs, but perhaps the fiercest are those with Fulham and Chelsea.
Chelsea have been significantly more successful on the field of play than QPR in recent years, making it more difficult to maintain an intense rivalry.
Terry was found not guilty of a criminal offence in a court of law, but the FA banned him for four matches and he lost the England captaincy over the incident regardless.
Amit Bhatia stepped down as QPR chairman in October 2023, with Lee Hoos assuming the position alongside his current duties as chief executive.
Bhatia, who remained on the club’s board, acknowledged that he has been unable to dedicate as much time to his role as required.
Previously, the club was in the hands of controversial Formula One duo Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore and then Tony Fernandes afterwards.
