Championship League Snooker: Former Crucible semi-finalist Andy Hicks in action on day one

The snooker season is back as Leicester’s Morningside Arena plays host to the opening day of action in the 2022 Championship League.

The world's favourite cue sport has returned for another enthralling season as a total of 128 players battle for the first ranking title of the new campaign.

All the competitors have been separated into 32 groups of four during the first stage of the month-long event. The winner of each group will move on to stage two.

The eight best players will then move on to stage three, which will consist of two more groups. The winners of those will ultimately proceed to the final, which has been scheduled for July 29, 2022.

Tuesday will see the first 12 matches of the new season as players from Group 13 and 24 take to the table.

Former world championship semi-finalist Andy Hicks will be one of the men in action as he takes on Allan Taylor, Sanderson Lam and Robert Milkins.
Lam qualified for the ranking event after sealing his place on the world snooker tour with a victory at Q School.
Milkins, on the other hand, arrives in Leicester just three months on from his spectacular win over Kyren Wilson in the final of the 2022 Gibraltar Open.

Taylor, who finished his last two Championship League campaigns in the round-robin stage, will be looking to go that one step further on his third attempt.

The other group will see David Grace, Craig Steadman, Aaron Hill and Ben Hancorn all go head-to-head.
Grace is a former Northern Ireland and UK Championship semi-finalist, however he is yet to progress past the round-robin stage at this event.
Steadman is a 2021 Snooker Shootout semi-finalist and enters the tournament having recently regained his place on the world snooker tour.
Hill, who back in 2020 enjoyed a shock win over Ronnie O'Sullivan in the European Masters, will compete in his first ranking event since his victory at Q School last May.
Hancorn, on the other hand, is a 2022 Gibraltar Open quarter-finalist and will be looking to kick on from that impressive run.
