Yarmouth best bet: Oisin Murphy can bring best out of Bell Shot

There will be plenty enjoying the Bank Holiday sunshine at Yarmouth this afternoon, and this handicap sprint could send some lucky race-goers off to the beach with some tidy winnings in their pocket.

Dion Baker and Beylerbeyi are the early contenders jostling for the favourite tag, with the former the only last-time-out winner in the 11-runner line-up, having landed the odds by a neck at Brighton just six days ago.

Beylerbeyi has not won in 15 attempts since his debut success at Deaville in 2022, but he has managed three runner-up near misses this term, including at this venue last month, and his chances must be boosted here by carrying William Buick for the first time.

That same argument could be made for Bell Shot, who landed three wins for Charles Hills during his juvenile and three-year-old seasons, before switching to Robert Cowell’s yard for what proved to a barren 2023 campaign.

Suggested best bet: Bell Shot in the 16:50 at Yarmouth

Another change of scenery earlier this year saw the five-year-old gelding hit the ground running for new trainer Michael Appleby by landing a nine-runner handicap on Lingfield’s all-weather track in March.

Runner-up at Wolverhampton two weeks later, his first turf outing in late April brought another frame finish, and although he was unable to justify his favourite tag at Musselburgh that day, he gave an honest account of himself and was just found wanting in the final stages of his first attempt at a longer mile trip.

The absence of usual jockey Alistair Rawlinson has paved the way for the significant booking of Oisin Murphy, whose very presence has probably already shaved a couple of points off Bell Shot’s price.

The former champion jockey looks set to make a bold bid to reclaim his crown this term, having already chalked up 67 wins from his 301 rides for an impressive 22 percent hit rate, which is boosted further by another 97 frame finishes (54% place rate).
