Wolverhampton each-way racing tip: Starfighter aiming to shoot down firm favourite

Eight runners go to post for the last race at Wolverhampton’s evening meeting, and the word in the Tipstrr camp is that the favourite might not have things all his own way.

A quick glance at the form book suggests Hill Station will take all the beating here, and after landing back-to-back successes at Lingfield and Southwell in December, he looks in prime shape to kick off the new year by completing a tidy hat-trick.

However, the favourite’s short price could be argued to have enhanced the betting value of his seven rivals, with Havanazam returning to the Flat after encountering breathing difficulties (because of or despite his recent wind surgery) on his hurdle debut last month.

If that problem is resolved, then Tom Symonds’ four-year-old could bounce back here, but arguably the best-value option for each-way punters is two-time course-and-distance winner Starfighter.

Mark Loughnane’s capable eight-year-old was not seen at his best last time out over this very trip seven weeks ago, although that run could possibly be excused to some extent after he found himself boxed in three furlongs out and was never able to get on terms with the leaders.

Clearer runs saw him make the frame on each of his previous two runs, both over this course and distance, firstly winning cosily in September, and then finishing a close-up third (just a nose off second) here ten days later.

His 50-day break should bring refreshed racing legs to the track, and with the trainer’s son, Billy Loughnane, retaining the ride, any unimpeded run approaching that kind of form could well see him in the mix on the approach to the line.
