Wolverhampton best bet (2000): Reverberation looking to bounce back after recent near misses

We kick off our coverage of the evening meeting at Wolverhampton’s all-weather track with this competitive looking handicap that should provide an intriguing race over an extended mile.

Three straight wins in the space of five weeks make Lough Leane the unsurprising hot favourite here. The way he showed his fighting qualities on his penultimate outing over this course and distance, driving on in the closing stages to get his nose in front right on the line, suggests he will be tough to beat.

David Simcock’s four-year-old was last seen six days ago, when he was again driven out to win in commanding fashion at Newcastle, and he appears to have enough in the locker to overcome his subsequent five-pound penalty to extend that winning streak.

Expected to run the favourite closest is another course-distance winner, Prince Ali, whose last dozen outings have all been at this venue, and after finishing third and second in his last two efforts, he will be looking to go one better over this shorter trip under Archie Young’s valuable seven-pound claim.

Should either or both of the two market leaders falter, or even if they complete a 1-2 as expected, then their short prices enhance the value of their six rivals in their battle for any available each-way scraps.

The lightly-raced Cobh Harbour has attracted a smattering of support from Tipstrr’s each-way pundits, and after failing to build on a couple of promising runs just before Christmas, he might be ready to raise his game on this significant step-up in trip.

Attracting most attention, however, is the JS Moore-trained Reverberation, who is looking to transfer some eye-catching performances at Chelmsford to only his second ever visit to this track, the first having been a fifth-placed finish over an unsuitable mile-and-a-half trip in early December.

Suggested best bet: Reverberation each-way in the 20:00 at Wolverhampton

Two wins either side of Christmas at the Essex circuit gave a better indication of his capabilities, and they have since been followed by three straight frame finishes in February, the most recent of which by no more than a short head 24 days ago.

Useful claimer Joe Leavy is entrusted with Reverberation’s reins for the first time, and his seven-pound allowance could prove significant as it takes the nine-year-old well below his last winning mark over this distance.
