Wolverhampton best bet: Favourites should pay heed to Global Warning

Racing pundit Steve Jones landed us an 11/4 winner on Monday after advising it on Tipstrr at 11/2, and he has his eye on a similar prospect in the penultimate race on Wolverhampton’s evening card.

A good value bet to challenge the favourites is Global Warning, whose two runs since returning from a break in December strongly suggest that he is in the sort of form to strike again shortly.

He came sixth of 11 on his return in a higher-graded Class 5 handicap over the shorter -six-furlong trip on the at Kempton, but he is 0/12 at that track and he hasn’t won over that distance since 2021, and that was on an uphill track.

Suggested best bet: Global Warning in the 20:00 at Wolverhampton

It is therefore unsurprising that he found that test much too sharp for him, but despite being badly outpaced in the early stages, he still put in some good late work down the home straight, missing the places by only 1.5 lengths in what was a competitive 0-73 event.

Just prior to that latest run, he had returned to action with an impressive success over this course and distance, beating nine rivals by almost three lengths and that winning margin might have been bigger had his rider not eased down in the final strides with the race already won.

At his best, Global Warning is better than this grade, as he demonstrated when winning a Class 4, again over this very trip, off 81 two years ago.

That performance provided more than enough evidence that Global Warning still possesses the ability to win off 65 in this basement grade.

Of the others, Berkshire Phantom appears to be a justifiable favourite on the back of his easy course-distance win on Saturday when he beat nine rivals by a couple of lengths to provide a first-ever Flat win for his trainer Fionn McSharry at the 27th attempt.

Returning to the track quickly with a 5lbs penalty, he looks sure to go very well again, provided he can overcome stall 9, the widest draw of all.
