Wetherby best bet: Improving Jez Bomb primed to explode over shorter trip

If Atlantic Gamble can overcome his four-pound penalty, then he should put in a bid as bold as when landing his maiden success on Kempton’s all-weather track three weeks ago.

He looks likely to be sent off as a justifiable favourite ahead of closest market rivals John L Sullivan, First Encounter and Mist Rollin In, all of whom will fancy their chances of going one better than their last-time-out runner-up spots over the last few weeks.

However, causing something of a stir among Tipstrr’s each-way aficionados is Sam England’s lightly-raced maiden Jez Bomb, who has been showing some signs of improvement in the early stages of his three-year-old campaign.

A mid-division finish on season debut blew away a few cobwebs three weeks ago, and with that pipe-opener behind him, he shaped up much better in a 10-furlong handicap at this venue eight days ago, despite being among higher 0-65 company.

Finishing a creditable fifth of eight, all of the four horses ahead of him were rated higher than anything he will face in this 0-60 affair, and the fact that he was eventually unable to sustain his effort there suggests that he should be better suited by today’s shorter one-mile trip.

Usual rider Shane Gray should now be better informed as to how best to produce his ride in the closing stages, and together they look capable of contending for a frame finish, especially with four places widely available.
