Kempton top racing tip: Hydroplane looking to land competitive handicap

After advising yesterday's winning tip at 16/1 (SP 9/1), Tipstrr racing expert Steve Jones is hoping for more of the same when Hydroplane takes to the Kempton all-weather track on Wednesday evening.

Having beaten First Emperor here earlier this month, Blazeon looks likely to confirm that form on the same terms here, and she looks the best of the four market leaders.

But one who can beat her is Hydroplane, whose early prices looked very generous considering his run over this trip when he last raced on the Flat in January, finishing third behind the aforementioned Blazeon Five, who was sent off favourite and who came second, 1.75l ahead of Hydroplane.

However, that bare result fails to give a true picture because the front pair very much had the first run on Hydroplane, who had been held up at the back of the field and then had to wait to get a clear run in the straight.

By that time, the front pair were about four lengths ahead of Hydroplane at the furlong pole before the latter finally got into full stride in the closing stages.

Four lengths behind at the furlong pole, he hit top gear and was cutting back that deficit all the way to the line before running out of time, finishing a never nearer 1.75l behind Blazeon Five.

Suggested bet: Hydroplane to win the 20:00 race at Kempton

Hydroplane is three pounds better off with Blazeon Five here and Ben Sanderson, who rides him again, will surely want to have him closer to the pace this time and it is very significant to look back another couple of runs, to the day last summer when Hydroplane made virtually all the running to win at Chester.

That was also a 0-85 handicap and those forcing tactics paid handsome dividends as the seven-year-old came home well clear to beat seven rivals (four of whom were rated 83-85) by no less than six lengths.

The well-beaten runner-up that day, Emiyn, returned to the same venue a few weeks later to win the Class 2 Watergate Cup, a 15-runner 0-104 handicap, before finishing third of 14 in the Class 2 November Handicap to end his season on a mark that was four pounds higher than when he was well beaten by Hydroplane's strong, front-running display.
There must be a strong temptation for connections to go along that route again here, especially given the way in which he finished off so strongly from a long way back over this trip on his last visit.
Off an unchanged mark, his early prices represented very good value in comparison to those of the market leaders.
