Thirsk best bets: Atomise can turn tables while Giselles Izzy target minor places

There’s plenty in with a shout in this big-field sprint, with the 14-runner field split between the half-dozen market leaders and eight apparent outsiders looking to defy their odds.

16:40 Thirsk: Vickers.Bet Independent Family-Owned Bookmaker Handicap (6 furlongs)

Vying for the favourite tag is Paul Midgley’s Run This Way, who enjoyed back-to-back successes in the space of two days at Redcar and Ripon last week, and is strongly fancied to complete a quick-fire hat-trick here.

Lord Abama will have something to say about that if able to reproduce the form that saw him finish ahead of 17 rivals over this course and distance last time out three weeks ago, when he held off the challenge of the reopposing Atomise, who might just reverse that form on slightly better terms here.

That was the first run in eight months for Michael Dod’s five-year-old mare, and although she is winless in 15 outings since October 2021, there was plenty to like about the way she kept on gamely on her season reappearance.

Back in the saddle is in-form Connor Beasley, who is ticking along nicely this season (31 winners, 77 places from 196 rides) and turns up fresh from a 9/2 winner at Hamilton on Thursday.

Suggested best bet: Atomise in the 16:40 at Thirsk

With eight of the 14 runners available at 20/1-plus and as many as five places up for grabs, there’s plenty for each-way punters to get excited about, with Late Arrival and Garifullina quietly fancied, while recent winner Giselles Izzy could be ready to swoop in from beneath the radar for Iain Jardine.

While her three turf successes have all come north of the border at Hamilton, the five-year-old has put enough respectable performances elsewhere to suggest she can make an impact here.
Having won in early may, she came 10th of 11 under an inexperienced apprentice at Carlisle eight days ago, and she is expected to perform better under returning usual rider Andrew Mullen as she steps back up to six furlongs.

Her best runs over this trip have all been on going that is good or better, so she should appreciate the sound of her hooves on Thirsk’s good-to-firm ground, and Giselles Izzy could well outrun odds that are hovering around 25/1 at the time of writing.

Suggested best bet: Giselles Izzy in the 16:40 at Thirsk
