Taunton racing tip: Cobra Commander can lead the charge on preferred ground

With fifteen runners scheduled to line up for this competitive handicap, there are plenty in with a shout of contesting what appears to be a wide-open chase over just shy of three miles.

The withdrawal of early market leader Meechlands Magic has nudged the remaining 15 runners up a peg, with Getthepot taking over the favourite’s baton after continuing his recent improvement under Bryony Frost with a decent runner-up finish at Exeter last month.

The Grace Harris-trained Justshortofabubble is expected to build on six straight top-three finishes (including two wins and three runner-ups) before his fourth-placed finish at Stratford last time out a fortnight ago when his mark was 15 pounds higher than when he began that impressive sequence.

Of those further down the betting Time To Bite and My Bad Lucy merit consideration, but each-way specialist Richard Hutchinson, who runs his Read Between The Lines service on Tipstrr, has picked out Tom Symonds’ Cobra Commander as his best value bet, as his analysis below explains.

Planet Sport Bet: Bet £20+ cash on any runner in the race and if Cobra Commander finishes in the first 4 places, get a £5 Free Bet!

Relatively lightly raced for a nine-year-old, Cobra Commander rattled up a tasty double off marks of 75 and 84 last year, the first of which was over today’s course and distance on good ground.

Cobra Commander usually needs a run after a break and with this being his second start he should come on for his decent third of six (beaten 12 lengths) at Exeter 23 days ago,  and hopes remain  high that he can put himself right in the mix off a fair-looking mark of 86.

Niall Houlihan was on board for his two wins, and he brings his three-pound claim to the saddle for only the second time in seven runs since those two successes.

Cobra Commander looks particularly ground-dependent and needs a sound surface to be seen at his best, so today’s improving ground should be ideal.

With conditions set to suit and the right jockey on board off a fair mark, he looks worthy of an each-way punt, especially with four places widely available, and as many as five in some quarters.

  • Suggested bet: Cobra Commander each-way in the 15:33 at Taunton
