Southwell each-way-tip (2000): Sugar Hill Babe can make presence felt despite rising mark

After all the hullabaloo of Cheltenham’s opening day, flat racing takes centre stage in the evening, with this five-furlong dash one of the most competitive races on Southwell’s all-weather card

Barely a single betting point covers the top five in the betting here, which suggests that they all have a chance to land this sprint, but also that four of them definitely won’t and at no better than 6/1 they don’t hold much appeal in such a tight market.

Of the five, the nod might just about go to the sparingly raced Whiskey McGonagall, whose low mileage served him well when a one-length runner-up on his only outing of the year at Newcastle nine weeks ago.

However, we’re happy to keep the faith with Lisa Williamson’s promising four-year-old Sugar Hill Babe, who has landed us an 18/1 win and a 10/1 place when we’ve backed her on her last two outings, and it would seem churlish to abandon her now.

Both of those runs were at Newcastle earlier this year, and it’s worth noting that her runner-up spot 11 days ago could almost be excused as she broke badly, made amends too quickly to get her nose in front, and ultimately had nothing left when additional effort was required in the closing stages.

She has been nudged up another four pounds, which takes her ten pounds above her winning mark, but Alex Jary’s claim keeps her relatively well-in against this company, and she still has plenty of scope for further improvement.

Suggested best bet: Sugar Hill Babe each-way in the 20:00 at Southwell
