Southwell each-way tip (2030): Desert Quest on a mission to defy outsider odds

Our partners in the Tipstrr office have been busy crunching their numbers to provide us with their most widely-backed each-way selection from the very last race on Southwell’s Tuesday evening card.

20:30 Southwell: Boost Your Acca-Fenwa with BetUK Handicap (1 mile 6 furlongs)

If one of those each-way prospects are to make it to the winner’s enclosure, they will have run a good race to get the better of short-priced favourite King Viktor, who made the most of an easing mark to win over this course and distance 12 days ago, and although penalised, the extra 2 pounds here should not slow him down too much.

Fellow market leaders Smokey Malone and Polar Princess look sure to have a say in proceedings, especially the former, who hit the ground running after a four-month break to win here at the same meeting as King Viktor’s and over the very same trip.

Beyond those three, the remaining seven runners are all available at double-digit odds, which means at least one will be landing a frame finish at a decent price.

Of those, the one to tick most boxes in terms of past performance and recent form is the Ewan Whillans-trained Desert Quest, who is the only runner beside the two favourites to bring last-time-out success to the starting line.

After a promising summer campaign that ended with a close-up runner-up spot in September, this capable six-year-old was given a couple of months off following an aborted attempt over hurdles in November.

Returning to action seven days ago over a shorter 12-furlong trip at Newcastle, Desert Quest recovered from missing the break to emerge from mid-division two furlongs and ease clear of his eight rivals in a strong finish.

The additional two furlongs here will pose different questions, but the way he kept on over Newcastle's challenging uphil track last week suggests he had more in the locker to cope with the extra distance.

Off an unchanged mark and under the same jockey, Ryan Sexton, Desert Quest might need the market leaders to falter if he’s to win, but at the same time he looks as well-equipped as any to make a bid for the minor places.

Suggested best bet: Desert Quest each-way in the 20:30 at Southwell
