Southwell each-way tip (1900): Chuzzlewit to confirm progress on favoured surface

Southwell racecourse
Only two of this high-class 13-strong field of older handicappers are younger than six and they are the pair on whom Tipstrr racing pundit Steve Jones has cast his expert eye for betting value.

Chuzzlewit has long been highly regarded at home, and this unexposed four-year-old looks an attractive proposition as he drops back from a mile following a very solid run in a Class two at Newcastle on New Year’s Day.
That race was a very strong 0-105 affair and Chuzzlewit was in the process of running a big race, pressing the leaders approaching the furlong pole, despite challenging down the unfavoured far side, before just running out of steam up the hill in the final furlong.

That run followed a promising return to action in another Class two, over this same distance, at that same venue last month, in which he was beaten only a couple of lengths when coming fourth of 10, missing the places by just half a length and finishing a length behind the runner-up.
Given that it was Chuzzlewit’s first outing after a short break, during which time he had been gelded, it was a very decent run.
With less than a furlong to go, he was in second place and had that race been on today’s sharper flat track, he would surely have gone close instead of dropping back to fourth place in the closing stages.
The top three performances of his eight-race career to date have been his three runs on the all-weather, so he is clearly much better in this sphere than on turf.
Compared to his older and more exposed rivals, Chuzzlewit has lots of scope for further progress in all-weather handicaps (particularly on tapeta) and this switch to a sharper trip looks a shrewd move.
Suggested bet: Chuzzlewit each-way in the 19:00 at Southwell
- Tip advised by Steve Jones who runs CD Systems Daily Bargain on Tipstrr
Of the others, Doctor Khan Junior is a big player as he attempts to complete a hat-trick of tapeta wins following a seven-furlong win at Newcastle and then a very easy 3.5-length win over this trip on the tight, flat, left-handed circuit at Wolverhampton (off 4lbs higher).
He is up in grade today, and he is also up another 9lbs, but he is improving fast, and he obviously loves this surface. Still unbeaten in all-weather handicaps with a 3/3 record (all wins on tapeta, the last two over this distance), he must be respected.
Next Best bet: Doctor Khan Junior each-way in the 19:00 at Southwell
