Southwell best bets: Cusack in hat-trick bid as Visibility flies under the radar

Southwell’s Saturday card concludes with this competitive-looking race over a mile, with most of the dozen starters likely to bolt out the stalls with strong claims of at least a frame finish.

Top of the pile appears to be David Evans’ four-year-old Eagle Day, who enjoyed back-to-back successes in the month before Christmas and was a decent third of 12 last time out a fortnight ago.

The favourite is expected to go well under Hollie Doyle, but will not have things all his own way against some of his rivals boasting proven success over this course and distance, including the highly-rated Cavalluccio.

Also catching the eye is the David Thompson-trained six-year-old Cusack, whose most recent 12 runs since September have actually all been at Newcastle, where he has landed three wins among 10 top-three finishes.

He arrives here aiming to complete a February hat-trick after a career-best win in a 12-runner handicap 11 days ago, and will be looking to replicate the form he showed on his previous three visits to Southwell (1/14, 3/12 and 2/12) a couple of years ago.

Jonny Peate, who has been on board for his most recent successes, brings his useful three-pound claim back to the saddle, and it would be no surprise to see them at least make the four-horse each-way frame.

Suggested best bet: Cusack each-way in the 18:35 at Southwell

Anyone who likes to aim their each-way bets at bigger-priced outsiders might be drawn towards Scott Dixon’s seven-year-old gelding Visibility, who might just have been overlooked here following a down-the-field performance at this venue 25 days ago.

His previous two visits to the Nottinghamshire track were both successful, most recently a comfortable 2.5-length victory just four outings ago in December.

His subsequent efforts have all been in higher-rated company than he will face here, so he might just be flying under the radar to feature more prominently than his outsider odds might suggest.

Suggested outsider punt: Visibility each-way in the 18:35 at Southwell
