Southwell best bet: Cliffcake bidding to bounce back and justify market support

Our partners at Tipstrr have been busy crunching their numbers for us in order to share their most widely-tipped selection in the very last race of the night at Southwell.

20:30 Southwell: Always Gamble Responsibly With BetUK Handicap (6 furlongs)

An initial glance at the betting suggests that Clipsham La Habana will take all the beating here, but considering the four-year-old is winless in 11 outings since 2022, there has to be a question mark against him here unless first-time blinkers have the desired impact.

Michael Appleby’s three-time course-distance winner Tyke looks more appealing at his current odds, and despite being without a win in four attempts in 2024, only one horse has beaten this four-year-old in his four previous visits to the Nottinghamshire track.

He won over this trip in his last race of 2023, and looks well-treated on his return with Frederick Larsson’s three-pound allowance boosting his prospects further.

However, one with a serious chance of upsetting Tyke’s record and attracting plenty of support, both in the betting market and in the Tipstrr camp, is Roy Bowring’s capable six-year-old, Cliffcake.

Suggested best bet: Cliffcake each-way in the 20:30 at Southwell

A serial winner on both turf and artificial surfaces as a juvenile, his nine career wins from 35 outings include successes over various distances at this venue.

Cliffcake enjoyed his only course-distance success here just two outings ago in January, when he landed the odds as a well-backed favourite to fend off seven decent rivals by just under a length.

He was seventh of ten over the same trip last time out a fortnight ago, but excuses could be made for him being asked too much too soon under a claiming jockey, and the return of more experienced regular rider Lewis Edmunds should bring a positive response.

Cliffcake was readily available at double-digit odds when markets opened on Wednesday night, and although market support has seen his price slashed by two-thirds to as low as 5/1 in places, he still carries some decent value into a race that looks well within his grasp.
