Southwell best bets (1900): Beau Gars and Wadacre Grace shortlisted to make the frame in wide open handicap

PlanetSportBet are sponsoring Southwell's all-weather meeting on Tuesday evening, and this 14-runner one-mile handicap promises to be one of the most competitive races on the card.

The top four in the market are separated by no more than a single betting point, which suggests they all have realistic chances without really offering enough to dominate their rivals.

Of the four, following his move from the Osborne yard, Kynsa arguably looks the most interesting on his stable debut for Kevin Philippart De Foy, with Benoit De La Sayette a useful man to have at the reins off what appears to be a decent mark.

Soames Forsyte, Great Blasket and Streak Lightning will all have their backers, but somewhat ironically it is Jamie Osborne’s Beau Gars who looks to have a good chance of running his former stablemate close.

Acquired from Stuart Kittow over the winter, this lightly-raced four-year-old has acquitted himself well on his three subsequent outings, backing up a couple of frame finishes at Kempton with a best-yet third of eight over this course and distance 12 days ago.

He perhaps took charge a little too soon on that occasion, eventually headed by the high-rated favourite Lough Leane, but staying on strongly enough to suggest more could come from a better timed run.

Returning jockey Saffie Osborne will have learned from that race, and will be looking to extend a sequence that has seen her land two wins and a close-up second from her last four rides saddled by her father, Jamie.

Suggested best bet: Beau Gars each-way in the 19:00 at Southwell

With four places widely available in this wide-open handicap, there appears to be plenty of each-way options among the eight runners carrying a double-digit price, with Scott Dixon’s Sycamore looking likely to give a better account than his outsider price might suggest.

A more realistic case can be made for the Wadacre Grace, who appears to be flying somewhat under the bookies’ radar at around the 10/1 mark.

Charlie Johnston’s capable five-year-old won four of his 22 outings last year, and didn’t take long to open his 2024 account with a 1½-length success over this distance at Chelmsford in February.

He has since been a couple of lengths off the pace with two subsequent fourth-place finishes, but after a full month away from the track, he could be primed to give Franny Norton another decent ride here.

Suggested best bet: Wadacre Grace each-way in the 19:00 at Southwell
