Sedgefield top racing tip (1708): Course-distance winner Coup De Coeur ready to prove class

On a relatively quiet Friday afternoon at the races, this final handicap hurdle from Sedgefield offers a competitive contest that should provide a happy return to winning ways for the favourite.

17:08 Sedgefield: Vickers.Bet Handicap Hurdle (2 miles 178 yards)

With just seven runners lining up, it would be unwise to write any of them off, with even rank outsider Sil Ver Klass better on his day than his price might suggest, while Brian Ellison’s The King Of May is another flying beneath the radar after some below-par recent performances.

Nearer the top of the market, the eye is more readily drawn towards handicap hurdle debutant Quaresome, who failed to stay a longer trip at Musselburgh last time out in November, and who's top weight is eased by the seven-pound claim of Charlie Maggs.

Calevade is also expected to go well, if able to replicate his liking for Cartmel, where he won twice last summer, but beyond all these, it’s hard to see past the early favourite, Coup De Coeur.

Suggested best bet: Coup De Coeur in the 17:08 at Sedgefield

Micky Hammond’s six-year-old finished third of 12 on his first completion of the season over this course and distance back in November, and returned less than three weeks later to convert that promise into a six-length success over the same trip.

Coming runner-up of nine behind Royal Rhythm at Wetherby’s Boxing Day meeting was no disgrace, while his most recent effort, again over this course and distance, could perhaps be excused for having been allowed to run too close to the early pace.

Champion jockey Brian Hughes missed those last two rides, but was on board for November’s course-distance success and after winning on his last ride at Doncaster on Wednesday, his return here appears to be a step in the right direction for Coup De Coeur’s prospects.
