Sandown each-way tip: Harry Cobden bids to defy outsider odds on The Last Day

Jumpers in action at Sandown Park
This two-mile handicap could prove to be a fascinating race for each-way punters to enjoy, with several capable chasers carrying big odds to challenge the hot favourite.

If the bookies have this race weighed up correctly, then the Skelton yard’s Etalon should win this at a canter, and he certainly has all the credentials to complete a season hat-trick, albeit his last outing at Warwick only provided one hopelessly outclassed rival.
His odds-on price might attract a few serious bettors, but for the rest of us mere mortals, those short odds do at least enhance the each-way prospects of all of his nine rivals.
Olly Murphy’s Gunsight Ridge looks interesting as a low-mileage nine-year-old who could well bounce back in positive fashion after falling four out when well placed to mount a challenge at Wetherby last month.
Hardy Du Seuil could be one to watch through the spring after a successful hurdling campaign last year, but Jamie Snowden’s seven-year-old might be in need of a pipe-opener on his return to chasing after a nine-month lay-off.

Lower down the betting, Fast Buck and Le Ligerien are both capable of carrying double-digit odds into the frame, especially if you can find one of the bookmakers offering an extra each-way place, but most interesting of all is the Evan Williams-trained The Last Day.
His jockey Harry Cobden rarely travels anywhere for just one ride, even less so if he doesn’t consider he has a realistic chance of adding to his win tally, and it’s worth remembering that when he did so at Plumpton on Monday, he landed us a tasty 9/2 winner on board Lario (advised at 8/1 in the morning).
The Last Day clearly looks a riskier prospect as a 20/1 outsider, but this 12-year-old is no pinsticker’s forlorn hope, having landed the Red Rum Chase at Aintree two years ago, and then finishing third behind Dancing On My Own in the same renewal last April.
Another Aintree tilt might be the target, and after falling at Ascot on season debut, The Last Day took a step in the right direction at Wetherby a month ago, when he kept on gamely to finish second behind Mount Tempest.
Off an easing mark, the veteran could not be in better hands than those of Planet Sport Bet racing ambassador, Cobden, who is currently just one winner behind Sean Bowen (who rides Gunsight Ridge here) in the race for the champion jockey crown.
