Royal Ascot tips: Ramatuelle to turn tables on Guineas rivals in mouth-watering Coronation Stakes

Royal Ascot

The Coronation Stakes means we have back-to-back Group 1 quality to enjoy, this time with nine three-year-old fillies lining up to serve up a mouth-watering race over Ascot’s old mile.

15:45 Royal Ascot: Coronation Stakes

  • Race details: 1 mile (old), Group 1, 3-year-old fillies only
  • 2023 winner: Tahiyra (8/13F), Chris Hayes (J) - Dermot Weld (T)
  • Recent Trends: 20/22 winners priced 8/1 or shorter, 4/7 winning favourites (two odds-on)

Opera Singer is jostling for the short-priced favourite after a stellar juvenile season that ended with figures of 1211, and she looks capable of bouncing back from her third place in last month’s Irish 1000 Guineas.

Coming from the Aidan O’Brien/Ryan Moore team, she cannot be dismissed lightly, but her ambitions look likely to be threatened strongly by Elmalka, Porta Fortuna and Ramatuelle, who finished in that order in the 1000 Guineas last time out in early May.

They were separated by a neck and a short head in a thrilling finish at Newmarket and their renewed rivalry could well produce another classic here, and this time we’re leaning towards Ramatuelle to turn the tables, a prospect that has attracted plenty of market support.

The 1000 Guineas was the first time in seven outings that Christopher Head’s charge had finished outside the first two places, albeit by the narrowest of margins after her surge to the front was eventually picked off in the closing strides.

Her season debut second at Deauville and her Guineas effort have been her only attempts above six furlongs, so this return to her preferred trip should suit, as indeed should the notable booking of red-hot Oisin Murphy for the first time.

Suggested bet: Ramatuelle in the 15:45 at Royal Ascot

Beyond those four classy principals, it’s hard to make a case for the five outsiders, who would need a couple of the market leaders to falter to even make the frame.

That said, Guineas winner Elmalka has drifted out to a tempting 13/2, while in the Tipstrr camp the each-way specialists have jumped on both Skellet and See The Fire at juicy outsider odds.

Neither was seen at their best in disappointing efforts last time out in the Irish and English 1000 Guineas respectively, and of the two, Skellet appears to be better equipped to make her presence known here.

She won at the second attempt at Salisbury last September, and could count herself unlucky to go down by a neck in her final juvenile outing at Newmarket a month later.

Each-way punt: Skellet in the 15:45 at Royal Ascot

Expecting her to win last month’s Irish 1000 Guineas on her season debut was always a big ask, but she should have stripped fitter for the outing and could come closer to fulfilling her potential here.

Ralph Beckett and Rossa Ryan have only teamed up once over the first three days of the royal meeting, and they enjoyed instant success when Going The Distance lived up to his name to land the King George V Stakes in some style as a 9/1 shot on Thursday.
