Nottingham best bets (1540): Great Chieftain and Charming Whisper can exploit drop in class

Nottingham has some decent horse racing action on Tuesday afternoon's card, and this handicap over an extended mile promises to provide one of the most competitive races of the day.

15:40 Nottingham:  Abba Fever July 6th Book Now Handicap  (1 miles 75 yards)
Early market leader Worrals is fancied to follow up her maiden success at Goodwood 17 days ago, but we prefer the look of Great Chieftain, who looks the main threat for both the favourite tag and prime spot in the winner’s enclosure.

This lightly-raced maiden blew away the winter cobwebs with a couple of promising all-weather outings, before responding positively to first-time blinkers at Epsom a month ago, running on well to finish a never-nearer fifth of 11.

That was in stronger 0-80 company, so this slight drop in class should offer a better chance of making an impact over the same distance, especially if other significant factors align as hoped.

The three-year-old has been gelded since that outing, which should hopefully have a positive effect, while the blinkers are ditched in favour of first-time cheekpieces, all of which should help the notable presence of Tom Marquand (his fifth different rider in five outings) bring out Great Chieftain’s undoubted potential.

Suggested best bet: Great Chieftain in the 15:40 at Nottingham

Of the others, there will be several fancying their chances of making the frame or better, and Philip McBride’s filly, Charming Whisper, certainly catches the eye at a decent price.

A winner on her turf debut over seven furlongs at Yarmouth last August, she went on to perform creditably in subsequent handicaps, rounding off her juvenile campaign in October with a couple of decent fourth-place finishes at Newmarket.

Pitched in against 0-90 and 0-85 company respectively, all six horses ahead of her across both races were rated much higher than anything she will face here, and assuming she is tuned up as expected for her seasonal bow, then she could well give Adam Farragher a more competitive ride than her odds suggest here.

Each-way punt: Charming Whisper in the 15:40 at Nottingham
