Newmarket top racing tip: Native Approach to hit the ground running for in-form Appleby yard

The feature race of the final day of Newmarket’s early-season meeting is the titular Craven Stakes, which promises to be an intriguing one-mile affair between seven promising three-year-olds..

15:35 Newmarket: Craven Stakes (1 mile)

Early first-time-out races are always capable of throwing up an upset or two, which perhaps explains why the like of Champagne Prince and Haatem have gained some traction among Tipstrr’s each-way pundit, while Cambridge might well outrace his mid-market price under Ryan Moore.

However, the three market leaders look set to dominate here, with any one of them capable of edging what looks like a very competitive renewal.

Andre Fabre’s runners always command respect when they appear this side of the Channel, and Alcantor certainly ticks all the right boxes after crowning three juvenile wins with a comfortable Group 3 success at Saint-Cloud, and only falling half a length short when taking on Group 1 rivals when last seen in October.

Eben Shaddad celebrated his career debut with a win on Newmarket’s six-furlong July course last summer, before looking more than useful when coming third in the Tattersalls and the Dewhurst here in the autumn.

However, our final nod goes to Native Approach, who is the only one of the seven starters not to have had a juvenile outing, but he is also the only runner to have been on the track during the last six months.

Charlie Appleby eased his three-year-old in with a couple of early-year outings on the all-weather at Kempton, where he shaped up nicely to come second of nine over seven furlongs before landing his 2/5 favourite odds with a facile two-length success over a mile nine weeks ago.

Reunited with William Buick, he is sure to go well again for Appleby’s in-form yard that has saddled eight winners (six of them under Buick) and seven runners-up in their last 27 runners since the beginning of the month.

Suggested best bet: Native Approach in the 15:35 at Newmarket
