Newmarket each-way tip (1605): Manhattan Mirage poised to spring surprise at tasty odds

If the bookies are to be believed, then this seven-furlong sprint should be a two-horse race, but there’s one or two down the betting that merit respect and could gatecrash the market leaders’ party.

16:05 Newmarket: Alex Scott Maiden Stakes (7 furlongs)

It’s no surprise to see leading jockeys Ryan Moore and William Buick renew their rivalry on Kikkuli and Creative Story respectively, and the two betting principals both look to have bags of potential after each finished second in their only outings to date.

However, their short prices hold little appeal, and if close-up runner-up spots are a barometer for future success, then the Dominic Ffrench Davis-trained Manhattan Mirage certainly commands similar respect, and at a much more attractive price.

Finishing third and second in his first two juvenile outings last September, he gave a further glimpse of his capabilities on season debut at Doncaster’s Lincoln meeting last month.

Running boldly throughout over the same seven-furlong trip, the young colt was just edged out in the final half-furlong to finish a head behind the highly-rated Balmacara, with those two well clear of their other five rivals.

A similar showing on better ground here should put Manhattan Mirage right in the mix for the minor places, and maybe even better should either or both of the fancied market leaders fail to land their odds.

Suggested best bet: Manhattan Mirage each-way in the 16:05 at Newmarket
