Newmarket each-way racing tip: Glencalvie poised to land a blow at hefty odds

Run for Oscar ridden by David Egan wins Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket

The last race on Newmarket’s busy card will be a tough test over a mile of well-trodden heavy ground, and Tipstrr pundit Richard Hutchinson is one of many to fancy the chances of an unlikely outsider.

15:45 Newmarket: Betfred ‘Pickyourpunt’ Handicap (1 mile)

Recent form suggests that Kalamunda is a justifiable favourite after landing back-to-back wins at Southwell and Kempton last month, although his mark is now 14 pounds higher than his last turf outing in September.

That hike might improve the chances of fellow market principals Mount King and Forward Flight, both of whom also arrive off the back of last-time-out victories, while Mayz also won  just 11 days ago in similar testing conditions at Windsor.

Of those carrying a double-digit price, Big Bear Hug could well be better for her most recent outing following a four-month break, but our Tipstrr representative, Richard Hutchinson, who runs Won Two Three Racing Tips on our partner site, likes the look of the Phil McEntee-trained Glencalvie, as his analysis below explains.

Planet Sport Bet: Bet £20+ cash on any runner in the race and if Monkmoor Pip finishes in the first four places, get a £5 Free Bet!

At just three years old, Glencalvie was originally with Ralph Beckett and acquitted himself pretty well in the two maidens under his care, postmarking a high of 78 on debut over a mile on Lingfield’s all-weather track.

She was sold on cheaply at sales in July 2023 and is now with Phil McEntee, for whom she ran on well in her final maiden run over an inadequate seven furlongs, postmarking 63 and it looks like she retains plenty of ability for future handicaps.

She has run twice over a mile in handicaps and her last run was also promising where she dwelt, but she travelled well in behind before running green, coming under pressure before running on into a never-nearer fourth of ten, going down by five lengths.

The horse in third that day was today’s well-fancied favourite Kalamunda, but significantly Glencalvie receives a 16-pound pull for just four lengths, which appears to give her the edge at the weights.

Connections add a tongue-strap today, which can only be beneficial to her chances, so at the current 20/1-plus with as many as five places up for grabs, she looks decent each-way value.

Suggested bet: Glencalvie each-way in the 15:45 at Newmarket
