Newmarket best bets (1455): In-form James Doyle can bring the best out of Benacre

Newmarket’s Craven meeting is crammed with quality races and usually offers a good insight into the form and prospects of some of the horses that are being aimed at the Classics later in the season.

The ground on the Rowley course has been declared as good, which should suit the majority of these one-mile handicappers, not least the well-fancied Slipofthepen, who kicked off his career with back-to-back wins a year ago, and despite being found out in a tactical race last time out 11 months ago, the Gosdens’ colt looks full of potential now he's handicapping.

Bopedro and Aerion Power look well-equipped to mount a challenge under Rossa Ryan and Ryan Moore respectively, but our nod goes to the Charlie Johnston-trained Benacre, who is expected to build on a promising return to action..

After winning three of his five outings as a juvenile, last season’s winless return  was a relative disappointment, especially after beginning with a promising runner-up spot in the King Charles II Stakes over seven furlongs here at the Guineas meeting.

A subsequent gelding operation during his six-month winter break may have had the desired effect, and he certainly shaped up well when he reappeared last month at Wolverhampton, where he finished a close-up third in the Lincoln Trial.

The Johnston yard has been turning horses out in good nick so far this season, while jockey James Doyle has hit the ground running with six winners from his first 24 rides, plus a further eight frame finishes

Suggested best bet: Benacre in the 14:55 at Newmarket

With five places up for grabs at most bookies, there’s clearly some each-way value to be found down the betting, with the likes of Storm Catcher and Bajan Bandit looking interesting at tasty odds, while the price of Canoodled can probably have a few points taken off it just for having William Buick at the reins.

However, it is Dayofourlives who has caught the attention of a broad swath of Tipstrr’s each-way pundits, and three wins from his last five outings indicate that he knows how to make his presence known in the final stages.

The middle of those three successes was actually a dead-heat with the highly-rated Ouzo at Ascot, where he also went on to finish a decent third a month later, before rounding off his campaign with an all-weather win at Chelmsford in November.

Although now off a four-pound higher mark, this four-year-old is still unexposed with untapped potential, and it’s worth noting that his trainer Marco Botti boasts a good record on Newmarket’s Rowley course, saddling seven winner from just 32 runners there over the last five years.

Each-way punt: Daysofourlives each-way in the 14:55 at Newmarket
