Newmarket best bet: William Buick can bring the best out of Ventura Rascal

Newmarket racecourse in the sun
This wide open handicap has got Tipstrr’s horse racing community rubbing their hands in glee, with a couple of contenders catching their discerning eye for value.
17:18 Newmarket: Racing Welfare Handicap (1 mile)
With no horse lower than 5/1 in the betting at the time of writing, the bookies’ jury appears to be out, with Double Time and Restrict the tentative early favourites under Oisin Murphy and Hayley Turner respectively.
That suggests we’re in for a wide open race that creates the potential for virtually any of the 14 runners to put themselves in the mix.
Looking at the most popular picks on the Tipstrr site, we’re torn between a couple of likely contenders, starting with the top-weighted Perfect Thunder, who looked a promising type when under the wing of JP O’Brien, and might be ready to perform better under Benoit de la Sayette here than he has on his three other outings since joining the Patrick Owens stable.

However, the one we’re plumping for is Kevin Ryan’s six-year-old gelding Ventura Rascal, who responded well to a first-time tongue strap a week ago when he almost caused a 28/1 upset in a 12-runner handicap at York.
Six career wins illustrate that the ability is clearly there, and the significant booking of William Buick to team up for the first time can only enhance his chances of recapturing that winning form.
The Ryan yard has produced two winners and three each-way places from their last seven runners over the last couple of days, so we’re expecting Ventura Rascal to have been turned around in good shape after last week’s outing.
Suggested bet: Ventura Rascal each-way in the 17:18 at Newmarket
