Newcastle each-way tips: Third time lucky for course-distance specialist Danielsflyer

Newcastle racecourse
The two market leaders look underpriced, but that gives extra value to Danielsflyer, who has far stronger course-distance form to his name over recent weeks than either of the betting principals.

Trainer David Thompson has gone close with several of his runners at this track in recent days and his veteran performer looks to have been lined-up for this race.
Danielsflyer tackled this very trip on both of his last two outings, the first of which featured eight runners rated higher than any of today’s field and Danielsflyer went very close to winning it, finishing third of 11, beaten a head and a short-head in a close three-way finish with the front trio clear of the rest.

That looks to be strong form in the context of this lesser 0-62 contest, yet Danielsflyer is a pound lower this time, despite running another big race on his latest visit, also over course and distance, a month later in mid-November.
On that most recent occasion, the 10-year-old again finished third of 11 in what was a higher-graded Class 5 handicap with all but one of the first ten home rated higher than any he will face here.
This looks an ideal time to catch Danielsflyer because the last time he ran at this venue when returning from a break, in March last year, he won a 0-66 handicap over off the top mark of 66 (four pounds higher than today) and, significantly, that win came under today’s rider, Sean Kirrane, who hasn’t ridden him over this trip since then.
Suggested bet: Danielsflyer each-way in the 18:30 at Newcastle
Of the others, Micky Hammond’s five-year-old, Ring Fenced, looks of interest on the back of a solid third of five in a higher-graded Class 4 fillies’ handicap over a mile at Southwell.
She was dropping back from 12.5 furlongs, so it was no surprise that she found things happening a bit too quickly on that sharp, flat circuit, but she now contests a basement-grade contest on this much more suitable uphill track, and she is a pound lower.
Completely unexposed over this distance, the mare is relatively lightly-raced for her age, and she was rated a stone higher than this as recently as last September, when she arrived at this yard from Andrew Balding, with whom she had won a Class 5 contest off 69 (nine pounds higher than here) this time last year.
Next Best bet: Ring Fenced in the 18:30 at Newcastle
