Newcastle best bet: Saisons D’Or primed to bounce back off lowest ever mark

A consensus of opinion among our partners at Tipstrr suggests that the old man in this 11-runner field can give his younger rivals a run for their money in this seven-furlong sprint.

19:30 Newcastle: Vickers.Bet Proudly Supporting British Racing Handicap (7 furlongs)

If the bookmakers have got their sums right, then market leaders Sun Power and Vindobala should have this seven furlong-sprint wrapped up between them, although neither has won a race in the last six months, and the latter has worryingly refused to race twice in his last eight outings.

If that’s enough to set the alarm bells ringing, then maybe better value can be found in a more reliable sort, with Yoshimi looking capable of defying top weight after winning twice in his last four outings and looking in good shape again when coming second at Carlisle last time out a month ago.

Catching the eye off a more appealing mark is Jedd O’Keeffe’s experienced eight-year-old Saisons D’Or, who is no stranger to the Newcastle track, nor to the winning enclosure, having landed three course-distance successes here in the past.

He was quickly off the mark in 2023 when winning at Southwell in March, and although yet to replicate that form, four straight frame finishes between June and August showed enough to suggest that he still has what it takes to get his nose in front.

His last sub-par run at Ripon three weeks ago can perhaps be forgiven for being over a mile and under an unfamiliar rider, so the return of regular jockey Jack Garrity for this step back to his preferred seven-furlong trip off a lowest ever mark bodes well for an improved showing.

Suggested bet: Saisons D’Or each-way in the 19:30 at Newcastle
